It is always been a known fact that paper currency carries germs. Known that since I was a young lad. How long germs survive in that environment I have no idea.

Germs can breed on coins and bills for an extended period of time which is why it’s not wise to put coins in your mouth or even using bills for illicit drug activities like snorting.
