van question.... problem with air

Published:

anyone here know about vehicles?

i have a 1997 chevy astro van.the air comes on and it blows through in certain vents in the middle and back part of the van. however in the whole front part of the van the air won't blow through the vents at all.what does this sound like it could be.i don't want some mechanic to take advantage of me because of my lack of knowledge in this arena.thanks......

Mike, I'm not an expert on vans or auto mechanics. But I do own a van now ('96 Pontiac Trans Sport). Since both vehicles are GM products made about the same time they are probably pretty similar.

My van has a toggle switch for directing the air into the front part of the cabin or the front and back of the cabin. What you are describing sounds like one of two things. Your fan motor for the front of the cabin needs to be replaced or you have a defective switch. My guess is that it's the fan motor.

I'm assuming your defroster is not working either. If it is, then it could be another problem.

Mike, after giving this some thought, I have another idea. Most likely our vans have a single fan motor and air is directed via a damper that opens and closes. That damper is not operating properly. It could be the electrical connection that directs the damper.

Either way, I don't think it would be a major repair except that labor costs working on vans are higher than regular vehicles.

Let me know what happens. I might need this same repair in the future.

Hey mike....That's what I drive as a limo driver to and from the airport. This happened to the vehicle I drive. I might be wrong, but I do remember the mechanic said what RickG said. There are two motors, one for the front and one for the back. I was surprised to know this thinking one blower cooled the whole van, but it's not so. The mechanic said that the one motor in the front is not strong enough to supply the back vents. If you look at the back where you store luggage, on the left wall you'll see the vent cover, that's the back one, but I don't know where under the hood the front one is. Hope that helped.
Good luck.

I forgot to add that in my case, the back motor was out, not the front....LOL
