do you think the media makes tragic news seem like "entertainment"?  what i mean by that is do you think they take advantage of peoples overriding sense of fear and dread and make it into something that its not or also maybe feed on others feelings or weaknesses and turn into something they think people might be interested in seeing all in the name of ratings?

Of course they do- I had to stop tuning in to Fox news, CNN, etc... because I got sick of seeing Cho's face.
Well, one thing it did- it got the media off of Don Imus...............

I agree. The media has really gone too far, but people seem to lick it up. It's not just tragedy, it's anything that will raise eyebrows like the Anna Nicole Smith battle for her husband's fortune. Yes, her son's death, followed by her own, was very sad, but it wasn't as newsworthy as the war in Iraq and got more tv news coverage. Now if you google Simon Cowell you'll see pages and pages of links to comments about his "eye roll" on American Idol Tuesday evening. Even I rolled my eyes when Chris interrupted Simon and began to defend his crappy performance. Simon is very critical, but he's not evil (neither is Don Imus) and he probably wasn't even paying attention to Chris after his stupid remark that "nasal" is a form of singing. However, the fact the Chris wasn't in the bottom 3 this week proves that, sincere or not, his short message to VT got him some sympathy votes.

I saw briefly on the news last evening that some nut is claiming he plans on hurting a lot more people.

Yes, they are like vultures, flies and maggots. Anytime there's a mass killing tragedy, they swarm in to make better ratings and advertising dollars off the misery of others. Some even use this to say, "we were the first!!! see all the death and chaos we brought you. Now, a word from our sponsor.", and they cut to a funeral home commercial... sickening... and you can take the 'their just doing their job' defense and stuff in back up your anus from whence it came.

Dirty laundry is how they make money.
Just like Don Henley's song..."Dirty laundry".

They spend so much more time focussing on the killer than the victims. Every time I turn on the TV I see the VA Tech shooter's face. This isn't anything new, however. People have always been fascinated with gruesome murders. Look at how popular stories about Jack The Ripper have always been. We just live in a high tech age where all the the crap is "in your face."

Why do the news media hype all the bad stuff? Here's why.

If you were to approach two vending machines containing the local news and one had the headline "Boy Scout Helps Old Man Across Street" and the other had "Boy Scout Mugs Old Man on Street", which one would you buy?
