Sort of an unfair question because the "story" was written at least 100 years later and next to impossible to know if all the details are true or embellishments.

Celebrating the birth of someone very famous doesn't necessarily have to be on the exact date of their birth. And there is a high probability that someone was born in Bethlehem when Herod was collecting taxes and taking a census.

IMO, the "story" based on true events with a sprinkle of embellishments.
