The Numbers Game in Black History
The numbers game has been around for a very long time among the Afro-American and Black History as written by poet Claude McKay as recorded in Wayne F. Cooper's The Passion of Claude McKay:
"The operation of the game became more complex with its hectic spread. An army of collectors, who received the money with the slips, which they turned over to the bankers. Each collector was remunerated with 10% of monies collected. And from any client who played the lucky numbers he was entitled to 10% of his win. The controller's reward was 50% of the total sum turned over to the banker. Competent controller is a powerful asset in the setup and may have as many as 50 collectors in charge.
The chances of winning were increased by the combination plan of six ways of playing a number. No. 915 could be played thus:
915
519
159
195
591
951
A player might put six cents on this number, allotting one cent to each component".
And thus this is where our Lottery Corporation got their start in the black community by playing the 10 cent on what we called the bug from back in the day! Many blacks became rich as well as poor as results of The Numbers Game in Black History!!! As a child I can recall my Mom being a collector.
