Article Voting Progress
Published:
Well, I've got some stiff competition for Article of the month. (Please see my blog, 2 posts back, for details if you're not sure what this is.)
Here's the current stats:
Article
(Votes)
ASP.NET Ajax Grid and Pager
(26)
SuperToolTip
(18)
Settings Manager for Windows Vista Sidebar Gadgets
(11)
Introduction to WPF Animations
(4)
Interacting with Astoria Data Services
(2)
My article is the one in bold -- less than half the votes of the leader. I checked the leader's blog, and it turns out he's trying to get HIS readers to vote -- and being quite successful at it, I might add.
C'mon Lottery Post members! How about doing us proud by helping your intrepid Webmaster win the contest! You'd think with the number of motivated members we have that we could muster more than 11 votes!
First, click here to create an account: http://dotnetslackers.com/register.aspx
Then, click here to vote: http://dotnetslackers.com/articles/voting/vote.aspx?Id=2 (my article is the last one in the list)
How about it? Who's going to help me win?

Given the enormous membership of this forum, Todd should have won hands-down. It's not about the Xbox; it's about loyalty and devotion to those who are loyal and devoted to us. The petition has been posted for nearly three years now, and we're nowhere close to having the requisite number of signatures. Most members here have expressed an interest in federal legislation which would outlaw computerized drawings in lottery games, but they want someone else to accomplish this goal because they can't be bothered with it. Once we've achieved our objectives, the people who took no part in the process will be the first to count themselves among our numbers. They'll post in every forum, "Yeah!!! We did it!" WE did it. Not "Congratulations to all those who had the guts to fight while we stood by on the sidelines or signed the petition with names like Bugs Bunny and Seymour Butts."
WE did it. It's really easy to jump on a bandwagon after it has already arrived at its ultimate destination. What you non-participants don't realize is, you're needed on the journey; you're presence is required at the time the battle is being waged. You can't merely show up at the party afterwards exclaiming, "Hey, I'm one of you; WE did it!" and expect someone to pin a medal on your chest.
I really doubt that Todd needed an Xbox so badly that he wanted to win it this way. My guess is that there's a friendly rivalry between Todd and the other webmaster, and a gentleman's wager was made concerning who could get the most votes from his membership. The only mistake Todd made was that he SEVERELY underestimated the loyalty of his members.
I can only imagine that Todd is at least as disappointed as I am with these latest results ...
Thank you for finding the words; you pretty much nailed it.
You couldn't be more correct about the "X-Box" thing. I am not hard-up for a video game. It would be nice, but that's not the point. I honestly thought that hundreds of members would rush over there and vote for my article, if only to show a tiny sliver of loyalty. Maybe loyalty isn't the right word. Maybe it's pride in our community here.
To tell you the truth, I really struggled with whether I should even ask people to vote, because I thought it would be unfair to have so many people eclipse the other articles. I grossly overestimated this membership's response, to state the obvious.
More than anything, I think it would be best to close the book on this. The bottom line is that I write technical articles for DotNetSlackers because I ENJOY sharing my technical knowledge with the developer community, not to win contests. It's a great site for developers, and I hope I have turned some developers on to it.
Thanks for your comments Jim.
