Robert Frost said:
A liberal is a man too broadminded to take his own side in a quarrel.

Walter Lippman said:
Where all think alike, no one thinks very much.

And Thomas Paine said:
The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.

On the other hand,

Meldrick Lewis said:
If you ain't never pick up the sword, you ain't never have to worry about fallin' on it.

Mary Parker Follett said:
There are three ways of dealing with difference: domination, compromise, and integration. By domination only one side gets what it wants; by compromise neither side gets what it wants; by integration we find a way by which both sides may get what they wish.

And Indira Gandhi said:
You can't shake hands with a clenched fist.

I think I like Mary's resolution, emily your reflection is true, whether the conflict is within oneself, against external forces between people and, or nations. Conflict is like a dance it takes two to tango.

Without conflict, we'd all be zombies without free will or opinions, or look like the colorless characters in Pleasantville. There's nothing wrong with working out reasonable solutions to conflict. Have you ever known 2 people (even a married couple) who have lived or worked together for 30 years and don't even like each other? They're always either too afraid or just not interested enough to confront one another to say "I don't like this or that about you. Let's work it out." They don't like conflict so they don't get involved. But the conflict is there whether you choose to face it or simply turn your back and walk away.

I read #483 above as saying conflict won't survive (live long) unless you continue to fight. It doesn't say not to face the conflict. If it does, I disagree with it. If you witness an injustice, you need to get involved. The reason violence doesn't stop war is because it isn't a peaceful solutions and just feeds the hate.

usually if I witness an injustice, I feel compelled to say my peace and leave it at that. They either hear me or not.

Spy - smart. Some people go on and on trying to convince or get last word.
My numbers i post are how many days left to this administration.

There are conflicts, and there are conflicts - yesterday, today and tomorrow. We need co-operation, not competition. Some people just compete to be right or to have the last word. They go on and on and on. I agree with you, Ems.

If you don't want me to post on your blog, you could have blocked me or sent me a PM. I don't need to get the last word and I wasn't being argumentative. I thought you were quoting someone and were referring to page 483.   I also look at LP as a discussion site and often get private messages from people asking me to participate when I've been away for a few days. I didn't think a discussion meant saying "Yup, everything you write is great." I don't like conflict (and I don't like this current administration either) but I try to resolve whatever conflicts I face.

I hope at least a few other members post after me so I won't look like I'm trying to get the last word!
