Did the Detroit Lions choke or was it The Curse of Bobby Layne.

Published:

Updated:

While similar to the curse of Rocky Colavito that that was made in 1958 the Layne Curse continues for now 66 years.

According to Bobby's wife, after getting traded to the Steelers, Layne said "the Lions wouldn’t win a championship for another 50 years". The curse was made before the Super Bowl and when the NFL had 12 teams with six each in Eastern and Western Conferences. Had the LIons beaten the 49ers, a case could be made winning the NFC Conference lifted the curse, but apparently "the curse" took over in the second half and is still alive and well.

According to Cleveland Indians lore, after being fired as manager in 1958, Bobby Bragan walked out to the pitcher's mound at Cleveland Municipal Stadium and placed a curse on the Indians, saying "they would never win another pennant". Two years later, Colavito was traded. The last time the Cleveland Indians won the World Series was in 1948 and because they are now the Cleveland Guardians, apparently the curse will last forever.

I admire Dan Campbell, but I cringed when he passed up the field goal to go for it on 4th down. That may have cost him the game, points are precious in a playoff game.

Yup, in my opinion going for it on 4th down is what cost him the game. Although Campbell has got them going in the right direction, it was a costly mistake.

He went for it twice. Six points down the drain.  Alot of coaches do it thinking they are slick.   Mcarthy,Reid, did it all season. The lions played tough.

Didn't realize how many curses and jinxes on sports teams including all the teams in a city. The Billy Goat curse on the Chicago Cubs lasted over 100 years and closely followed by the 86 year Curse of the Bambino on the Boston Red Sox. Did Bill Buckner simply misplay the ball that rolled through his legs or did the curse freeze him?

All of the Cleveland sports teams were cursed though the Cavs broke through in 2016 winning the NBA Championship. Not only was the Browns last championship was in 1964, they never even played in a Super Bowl. And then there is the curse of being on the Cover of Sports Illustrated.

If the Chiefs lose, will that begin the "Curse of Taylor Swift"?

It was no curse just bad coaching. If you have a sure thing 3 points  with a field goal  then kick it. He did it twice and failed twice. Again no curse just stupid coaching that kept his team from the superbowl.

Ths  lions coach loves to go for the first down. He did the same  thing against the cowboys. He bypassed the extra point and lost and that's it. Stupid.

Watched the last two minutes of the Duke-Clemson game on Saturday and while Clemson was ahead by five points and despite 3 turnovers, they were still ahead by two with 14 seconds left. Duke was out of timeouts so I guess to be a good sport, the Clemson coach called timeout allowing Duke to set up a play, tie the game, and win in overtime. In the post game interview, the Clemson coach blamed the lost on one call the refs made early in the second half.

Is a curse the reason some coaches don't even know when they screw up and lose a game they should have won or do they just choke?
