I can remember back in the 50s going down to the lower Mohawk river and see raw sewage floating down the river from Schenectady and from further upstream towns. Disgusting to no end. Then there was the GE plant in the upper Hudson dumping mercury in the Hudson. The Hudson closed to recreational activity from Hudson Falls down to Stillwater.
