Some Pilgrim groups tried that when they landed in the new world. It was a community effort where each family would put their crops in a community  sharing plan with all the other families. They found out there were loafers in the community not putting in the effort to grow a successful crop.
That ended the sharing plan pretty quick. Each family was then required to provide for their own needs.
