Back in 1977 Carter went against Congress advising he was against development of the New B-1 Bomber. Both Houses of Congress were controlled by the Democrats but they were not happy, as out of control gas prices and rising inflation were weakening the country. Carter tried to pass bills for labor reform and consumer protection which were easily defeated. Jimmy's family members were also a liability. Sister Ruth was seen holding hands with Larry Flynt(Hustler magazine publisher) and his brother Billy is investigated for "influence peddling". Billy was paid $250,000 by the Libyan government. Billy was also photographed whizzing on an airport runway.
   Carters Chief of Staff(Hamilton Jordan)was seen snorting Cocaine in a New York Disco. Budget Director Bert Lance is forced to resign when charged with illegal business dealings that stemmed from before starting in Jimmy's admin.
Speaker of the House(D- Tip O'Neill) proclaims Carter as " the smartest public official I have ever known". In Carters' 1979 "malaise" speech, he tells the American people that they are undisciplined and need to show more confidence in his leadership.
The failed military attempt to recure the hostages doesn't help him either. Carter was considered, " A stubborn man, surrounded by mediocre advisors" His "failure to adjust to the energy problems that spiked inflation" resulting in the long lines for fuel where people waited for hours. Fuel prices doubled and tripled during his tenure. I remember this very well as a young motorist going to the fuel pumps. The Democrat Party was not in full support behind Jimmy and the elections results proved the rest of the country wasn't either. Luckily in 1980, the Americans wake up and Ronald Reagan wins with 489 electoral votes to just 49 for Carter.
Any of these have a familiar backdrop some 40 - 45 years later ??
