Recently, a Bill Moyer’s interview with a remarkable woman aired. At this stage in my life, I thought I had grown passed looking at someone and seeing a hero, not so. The interview was with a remarkable woman named Grace Lee Jones. Not since I watched Congresswoman Barbara Jordan of Texas give the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in 1976 had I been so inspired.
Born June 27, 1915 in Providence R.I. of immigrant Chinese parents. Grace received her B.A. from Barnard College in 1935 and her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Bryn Mawr College in 1940. In 1953 she married an African American labor activist named James Boggs till his death in July 1993. She has written a book titled Revolution and Evolution in the Twentieth Century published in 1974. Of course at the age of 91 her accomplishments are many and can be easily found on line. She is still active and doing community service work.
Back to the interview. Grace Lee Boggs is insightful, admirable, and engaging. Her experience from being on the front line for social justice reflects in the wisdom of her thought and speech. A true national treasure that engenders respect and honor.
