The 4 digit number and 3 digit number you can't escape
Published:
6174 is known as Kaprekar's Constant. It's a special number that emerges when performing a specific arithmetic operation repeatedly on any four-digit number (excluding those with all four digits identical). This process, known as Kaprekar's routine, involves arranging the digits of the number in descending and ascending order, subtracting the smaller number from the larger, and repeating the process with the result until 6174 is reached.
Here's how it works:
-
1. Choose a four-digit number:Start with any four-digit number where at least two digits are different. For example, 3524.
-
2. Arrange in descending and ascending order:Form the largest possible number (5432) and the smallest possible number (2345) using the digits.
-
3. Subtract:Subtract the smaller number from the larger number: 5432 - 2345 = 3087.
-
4. Repeat:Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the result (3087). 8730 - 0378 = 8352. Then, 8532 - 2358 = 6174.
-
5. Kaprekar's Constant:Regardless of the starting number (as long as it's not a repdigit like 1111), you will eventually reach 6174. Once you reach 6174, the process will continue to yield 6174.
This property was discovered by Indian mathematician D. R. Kaprekar.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Kaprekar constant for 3-digit numbers is 495. If you take any three-digit number (where the digits are not all the same), arrange the digits in descending and ascending order, and then subtract the smaller number from the larger, repeating this process will eventually lead to 495.
For example:
- Start with the number 871.
- Arrange the digits in descending order (871) and ascending order (178).
- Subtract the smaller number from the larger: 871 - 178 = 693.
- Repeat the process: 963 - 369 = 594.
- Repeat again: 954 - 459 = 495.
- Continue repeating the process, and you will always arrive at 495.

Insight
Pick 4 numbers that quickly reduce to 6174 often start with asymmetric digits and at least two strong values (7s, 9s, 8s).
