The kids in on my street are dropped off at the corner and walk up the street to their home.
The bus then travels up the street in the direction the kids walk to the next stop.

When I was that age the bus distance was .5 miles for grades K thru 5. Grades 6-12 it was 1.5 miles and it is still that way today in that district. If we lived within that distance we all either walked or rode our bikes to school. We were taught to watch out for cars and to look both ways before crossing the street. We would play outside in the street, at the ball fields at the school, ride our bikes all over town, go into stores and be gone all day till dinner time. And then go back outside after dinner.

Nowadays in some places parents get arrested for child neglect if their kids walk 50 feet up the street by themselves. Things sure have changed, and not always for the better.
