The Egg Trick

Published:

On a lighter note while we're waiting.  Anybody here know the principles of the egg trick? You know, the one where you could stand an egg on its' end on the first day of fall.

I can verify that's it's true.  Had a few standing at the same time for hours.  Even did it the next day - although I could tell that my powers were waning. What's the deal?

My Dad did that years ago. I thought he was just kidding me until he showed me. I don't know if it can be anytime or only the first day of fall. I think it only can be done first day of fall due to the earth's change in position to the sun, but I could be way off about that.

From Urban Legends:

It can be done, by the way -- balancing eggs, I mean -- but the trick takes lots of patience, eggs of just the right shape, a pinch of salt if all else fails... and, frankly, it doesn't matter what day of the year you attempt it.

The Bad Astronomy home page rightly condemns all this equinox-egg-balancing folderol as unscientific hooey, but don't let that stop you from gathering friends and family around to try it out yourself. At the risk of being boiled and dyed for heresy, I daresay there is more to life than science.

Thanks guys for the replies! Like I said - I did it myself. I had seen it done on my local morning news program and decided that I'd try it. I was amazed. It was actually easy to do. I could swear that I felt some kind of pull - sort of like a slight 'magnetic' pull.

I didn't even try to choose the best shaped egg. Although after I had done it, I checked a few different shaped eggs and found that the more oblong eggs were much more difficult to balance. Also if you look at an eggs shell you'll see that some are smooth and some are a little bumpy.

Oh yeah, btw I captured my experiment on video tape.
