Would you like some High Fructose Corn Syrup with that?

Topic of the Day: High Fructose Corn Syrup!

Some folks claim this is what is making our country fat. I tend to believe them after reading through every label in my shopping cart this week. Needless to say,I returned more than half of my "groceries" to the shelf. What I was really giving back was 2 tons of sugar! Now,really, does salad dressing need sugar? Or bread? Just the staples we take for granted are loaded with this stuff. Unbelievable!

How many of you have eaten a menu such as this on any given day?

Breakfast: Bowl of Special K cereal. We think this is healthy, right? I used to until I saw the enemy lurking from the ingredients--High Fructose Corn Syrup!

Lunch: Turkey Sandwhich with Mayo---ok,let's hold it right there. What kind of bread are you using? Hopefully not WonderBread because guess what? It's got High Fructose Corn Syrup! Do you have some mayonaisse on that sandwhich? Hopefully not Miracle Whip because, you guessed it, full of High Fructose Corn Syrup!

How about your turkey? Sure hope it's not Hillshire Farm Turkey Breast Smoked Fat Free Thin Sliced because, again, corn syrup's floating around in there also! The "fat free" tricks us!

Even Oscar Mayer Bologna's covered in the sweet stuff. Is that necessary? Check your deli meats, folks, because you'd be surprised how many of them include HFCS!

Do you have salad with your lunch? Keep an eye on your dressings! Kraft,Hidden Valley, you name it, all carry HFCS.

I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it. Maybe I'm slow to the game but when I saw it even in my FIG NEWTONS I just had to say something,LOL.

We haven't even gotten to dinner yet and already you've got a stomach full of sugar. Do you have soda with your lunch?? Yikes! They all contain HFCS.

We need to send an S.O.S to our country's food makers----SAVE OUR STOMACHS! Give us back healthy food at affordable prices! Now I only shop at Whole Foods Markets (a little pricey) or Trader Joe's but I'm still checking my labels! Just because you go to a "healthier" store doesn't mean you won't find HFCS creeping through the aisles somewhere.

It's time to bite back! Rant

We're all sugar addicts. I've cut out a lot of it, but it's very hard to do after 50+ years. Still, I'd rather have sugar or HFCS than Sucralose, which gives me a terrible headache. I think eating foods with HFCS in moderation is okay. I'm more concerned about saturated fat and cholesterol. If I don't make oatmeal, I eat 2 or 3 eggs in the morning, so one of these days I should have a test. One thing to watch for is juice from concentrate with added sugar or HFCS. You can buy juice without additives or HFCS for the same price. Juicy Juice is very sweet and is 100% juice. I usually only buy juice when there's a BOGO at the supermarket. Everything is so expensive nowadays. (look at cereal!) I rarely go to Wal-Mart, but I recently was there and found prices a little better on many items. I bought a 96 ounce bottle of apple-grape punch for $2.29.

BTW - I enjoy reading your blogs. You write very well.

Thanks for reading justx and jarasan! And,yes,no wonder we are sugar addicts, justx. I've heard that Sucralose causes all kinds of afflictions to certain people and that diet sodas contribute to weight gain. You are so right being concerned about saturated fat and cholesterol. Usually I eat EggBeaters or just make egg whites mixed with salsa. Do you have a Trader Joe's in Florida? They have the best EggWhite Salad on the market. And very low fat. Cereal prices are outrageous! $5.00 a box here in CA. The Walmart I live near isn't a superstore so they don't have all the foods, just a couple aisles so I don't get a chance to benefit from their cheaper prices. Sacramento doesn't have a lot of choice for grocery stores. Surprising for a city of 1 mill. Just the usual Safeway,SaveMart,Raleys.
