Michael Phelps caught with Cannabis pipe: report News of the World ©

January 31, 2009, 4:49 pm

Eight-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps is embroiled in a drug controversy, after News of the Worldpublished photographs of the American swimming superstar smoking what appears to be a bong.

The glass pipes are often used to smoke marijuana.

If the allegations prove correct, Phelps could risk his chance of adding to his medal tally at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The story claims Phelps partied for two days with students in November at the University Of South Carolina in Columbia, with one witness telling News of the World "he was out of control".

Reportedly Phelps knocked backed beers and shots of spirits, before being offered a bong from which he inhaled deeply.

"You could tell Michael had smoked before," the article reported a witness as saying.

"He grabbed the bong and a lighter and knew exactly what to do.

"He looked just as natural with a bong in his hands as he does swimming in the pool. He was the gold medal winner of bong hits."

The scandal doesn't stop there, the British newspaper also claims that Phelps' sponsors attempted to strike a deal for the damaging photos to be destroyed, including offering their client as a columnist for three years and other lucrative incentives.

This is not the first time Phelps has been in trouble with the law; in 2004 he was sentenced to 18 months probation for driving under the influence of alcohol.

          UPDATE!!! UPDATE!!!

Phelps has released a statement confirming the authenticity of the picture (if not quite confirming what exactly he was smoking):

I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

Who really cares if he smokes pot? This has absolutely nothing to do with his athletic ability. If he was stoned when he competed, he definitely wouldn't have come in first. After all, he'd be too busy giggling and pointing at those silly bathing suits!

It is obivous that Michael and his sponsors cared because they tried according to this article to offer lucrative incentives to keep these photos from being seen. If he was on some form of speed that was not detected in the test then that would possibly make him faster. I am not saying that he was on speed or taking any substance. I think Michael is the greatest swimmer ever!!! It is an unfortunate incident that his sponsors didn't want gthe world to know about.

The world will get you for anything. One must built to their specifications in order to have a chance. Like a robot designed for perfect execution of tasks.

He has apologized so we need to accept that and move on unless he backslides. Besides, if you think he's the only one doing this, think again, he just got caught. Plus I think it was a set-up.....so convenient for someone to offer him the pipe knowing he was putting back alcohol like water.

Oh DrannyMa7 - You couldn't have said it better. I was thinking the very same thing about this being a possible setup. It's clear that he may have a drinking problem and we all know alcohol clouds your judgement, so the acceptance of the marijuana would not seem strange if he was drunk. Things that make you say hmmmmm!!!

Truesee, what does speed have to do with smoking a little weed once in a while. I do not smoke dope at all (really) but I used to get high over 30 years ago in college. I still know people who like to smoke a joint once in a while and they do not take speed or heroin. What matters is if he was on drugs during the competition. I definitely care if someone cheats. That said, probably the other countries do that a lot more than we want to know.

Setup or stupidity looks like he shot himself in the foot. Right now he's probably beating his head against a brick wall.

"...... And after sporting chiefs announced laws which mean four-year bans for drug-taking, Phelps’ dreams of adding to his overall 14 gold medal tally at the 2012 games in London could already be OVER. ......"

Justxploring, I really like Mike and stand in awe of his abilities. He is by any stretch of the imagination the fastest swimmer in the entire world. After thinking about it I agree with you that speed has nothing to do with smoking a little weed.   The article only said that we was drinking and using a bong. The only thing I would say to Mike at this point is be very careful who you let into your private circle.

Still smells fishy to me and a setup is not out of the question, in my mind. You are right, truesee, everyone around you do not have your best interest at heart and will try to bring you down. Watch your back Michael Phelps!!

Yup, I agree. I'm not condoning recreational drug use, especially since he is a role model for children, but he has a right to his private life. This is why I want to just win the lottery & remain anonymous! When people become famous, they need to watch everything they do & say. I can go to the market without makeup or go outside in my pajamas without worrying about seeing my photo on the cover of a tabloid.   I fell asleep on the couch earlier and now it's 3:20 in the morning. My leftovers are still sitting on the stove and I shouted "Oh **** " and thought "Good thing I'm not a politician!" LOL

By the way, what I meant by "speed" was the drug, not his swimming.   I think I misread your other comment. I was saying smoking marijuana doesn't mean someone also takes hard drugs. Still, what's the difference between getting drunk or high? Oh, I know. One is legal!   ;-)

What are friends for? This is exactly what is wrong with this society right now. You can't trust anybody, whoever took that picture is a pathetic miserable POS. You have alcoholics, Ritalin, crack, and meth amp nut heads, and they rail against the weed, ridiculous.

If you want bailout, legalize weed and tax it. It would empty out the prison system, give the courts much needed relief, and give one less reason for gang activity.

Here is an interesting fact: 7 in 8 crimes in the US is gang related. People should be talking about doing something about the gang problem and not Mike Phelps doing a bonger.

America is a very unforgiving country when it comes to things like that... He's been all over the press nailed as a hero for the past year and now it comes down to this....and this is an Athlete, a role model! I am pretty disgusted....And he is stupid to believe that in the comfort of his own house surrounded by "friends" he was not going to get nailed at some point! Real athletes don't behave that way!

Michael has been parting since he left the Olympics even bought a condo in an area where there are hundreds of bars, taverns etc. so he could stumble back to his place. Here's a guy like many athletes who get millions of dollars worth of endorsements and for whatever the reason have to do something to screw up. Tarnish their image.

If he was so desperate to get high why didn't he get high alone in the bathroom not in public. Where someone could get a snapshot of him. Give me a break he's no different than the others when it come to stupidity. Does he even give a damn. He will if they take all the millions away. He has like 20 million in endorsements.
