How should the United states deal with piracy at sea ?

Somolian pirates are nothing but a gang of thieves who makes their daily living stealing ships and holding people on board for ransoms. They are a disgrace to the African Continent. OAU must punish Somalia. I believe their govt are behind this nonsense.God bless Capt.Richard Philips and his family. A true american hero who who gave himself for others to be free. Everyone say a prayer for this man. United nations and all the Nato alliance must got involve. I am suprised at the US president not commenting on the situation that after all the captain is from the states. For how long will you negotiate with pirates ? All ships travelling through the Gulf of Eden must be equiped with security forces to fight these so called mordern day pirates.

Somalia does not have a gov't.
Somalia is run by gang leaders and thugs. Has not had a legitimate gov't since somewhere in the 90s.

Why are you surprised? He has a Secretary of State who is addressing this publicly. He is working with Naval Intelligence and the FBI.   Clinton (who should be President IMHO) is very qualified.

JAP is correct. There is no government in control in Somalia.

Absolutely , Clinton did comment on that , thanks justxploring , Many countries have goverments but still have no control over their situation. Then the question now is what is the purpose of government who are corupted ?

A violent act would surely mean death not only for the Captain, but for others inland. We are currently in negotiations. Safety first, aggression later.

Some of those pirates are indeed thugs. Other "pirates" are just a bit annoyed at Europe's toxic waste being dumped off their shores, making people sick and killing the fish in the area. Same as the U.S. Coast Guard would do, if it were happening here. *That* dirty little secret is being kept out of the lamestream news.

What about Chevron, time*treat? They destroyed the fishing villages in Nigeria and poisoned the crops. Then they shot the protesters !!

The government of Somalia is dysfunctional and will not help eliminate piracy. All it takes is our resolve like sending one US Navy aircraft carrier make the whole Somali coastline a burning inferno and wasteland!

Let's cower and plead for the pirates to PLEEEEEAAAAASE return our captain. Pretty please with sugar on top? We'll throw in a few million dollars too!

Yeah, great plan. How French.

I have a different idea: We use our military experts to go in to that glorified row boat and wipe out every pirate, and take back our captain. Let's see how many American ships get targeted after that.

Todd has the right idea. If I'm reading recent indicators correctly, those pirates are about to get their first taste of a Navy SEAL team. The pirates have revealed their arsenal and their tactics, so all that's left is to hang the streamers and get this party started. I'm guessing they won't like the music very much, and they won't want to play with us anymore.

The navy seals had it figured out and did what they needed to do.
The captain survived the shootout and is free.

Ever think that was the plan all along??   So many people here are myopic and hateful. It was all Obama's fault a couple of days ago.   Now that Captain Phillips is free & safe, what are you going to say? There is no middle ground with people who lean so far to the right they would fall off the planet if it was flat.

By the way, some people have sent me emails asking why I stopped posting. Maybe when the facts are ignored, it's too hard to have a reasonable discussion. However, here are a few FACTS for you.

Somali pirates attacked two US Navy Cruisers in 2006. The USS Cape St. George & USS Gonzalez.

In 2007 they attacked the US Owned MS Nautica.

The ship they just attacked is the US Flagged/ DENMARK Owned Maersk Alabama.

In any case, I'm glad that the Captain is safe.

@justexploring: I guess I was right. Not sure what you're talking about with "Obama's fault" though. Don't think anyone was blaming Obama, just referring to his lack of utterances on the subject. *He's* actually the one who will likely start talking now and taking credit. I think your accusations about some people here expressing their opinions are directed at the wrong party. 'Nuff said.

Within 48hrs these Somalia pirates has captured 4 more ships wow!!. No more negotiation with these thugs .. fight fire with fire !! bring on the sharp shooters.
