The price of knowing a lot

When you’re as smart as we are, one of the things you know is that there’s no way to beat the odds.  No way to get around those buzzillion to nothing chances they’ve put into the multi-state lotteries.

We know there’s no way around it because we’re smart enough to see it’s purely luck.

We know they’ve put in a lot higher numbers into the matrix to further foil us if we think we can get around it with number histories.

We know those numbers are random because smart people have told us it’s so, because we’re smart enough to believe what other smart people tell us.

So, having acknowledged all that stuff we know, I’d observe that the last two draws from PB and MM included 53/36 (PB), and 53/50 (MM).  If I was feeling foolish enough, I’d probably swing back into the NY Lotto histories and the PB/MM histories and try to discover whether there appeared to be anything comprehensible in what’s happened in the past when those particular high numbers, 53/36 (PB), and 53/50 (MM) hit.

But, I’d observe from inside this idiotic mindset, there’s something else.  19 repeated on PB.  50 repeated on MM.  53 repeated between the two.

If I was feeling a really bull-goose case of insanity, I’d go back and look at those kinds of histories, as well:

Of course, I don’t play Mega Millions.  And if I did, I think I’d still be ‘way too smart to buy a ticket with, say, 57 on it for tonight.  I wouldn’t even bother looking for other numbers that seem to repeat themselves when 19, 50 and 53 suffered the enormous humiliation (to their randomness) in the coincidence of having repeated themselves.

I wouldn’t bother looking, even for a minute, for sets of numbers that struggle to defy the odds and hit repeatedly when those high numbers come down the pike and 19, 50 and 53 repeat themselves.

I’d be too smart for that, too practical.  Too sane.
