Looking at the photos I would suggest they put up a couple rows of snowfence parallel to the trench the train runs thru. I have not seen a snow fence in years.
For those that do not know what a snow fence is I will explain. It is verical wooden lath from 3 to 4 feet tall. The wooden lath is about one inch wide and about 1/4 in thick. They are wired together with a space between each lath about one inch with the rolls being about 25 to 50 feet long.
The snow fence is erected parallel to a highway about 30 feet or so from the edge of the highway and for the length desired.
What it does is help stop the snow from drifting on the highway where is normaly does. The wind will blow the snow to the fence and the snow will accumulate behind the fence.

Thanks JAP! Snow fence very interesting. You're probably right they did that because I've seen photos of things Chinese use that we used to a long time ago. Interesting trip back through time.

Correction about the windchill here .. down to -10 this weekend after the Alberta Clipper comes through possibly dropping snow. They're warning everyone to take a blanket, water and non spoilable food with them when traveling in case they get stranded. Probably normal reminder in colder climates.
