There may be a God, but I don't believe he's the kind of God that would allow so many different religions to exist creating so much war and misery and death since the beginning of civilization.
I'm an agnostic. I don't know for sure, but I won't proclaim to know for sure. Because If i did, I'd be just as bad as those who claim they have a monopoly on truth. And they don't.
This video makes a lot of great points, and that's the only reason I posted it, not because I'm an atheist.
That's a great way to look at religion. The whole point of faith is to believe something with all your heart and soul, without any doubt, and without needing to eyeball it. The "I believe what I see" type of religion is not religion at all, and definitely not faith. I suppose "spirituality" could be used, but it doesn't seem very spiritual to me.
Just my opinion, of course. It is obviously a very personal topic for every individual person. In fact, I am not saying this to criticize at all, just stating my views.
To me, faith is only as good as it's source. If a 10 year old boy is on a 3 story balcony of an apartment that is raging with fire, and the only way to escape is to jump onto the net below held by fire fighters, and the firefighter yells jump, but the boy doesn't trust the fire fighter, and/or is scared to do so, but all of a sudden hears his father's voice from below asking the little boy to jump, and to trust him, the boy will jump because he has faith in his father. he knows his father has never let him down. He will jump. There was some basis for the boy's faith.
However, blind faith, I cannot accept. One reason is that a Muslim, a Jew, or any others can have blind faith in their God or belief system, and can end up wrong. I'm not picking on the Christian religion, but that is the one that confuses me the most. it's the only religion, to my knowledge that claims it's the only way to heaven. Meaning, if you don't believe Christ was the savior, then you are condemned to eternal hell fire. That would mean every Muslim, Jew, Buhdist, and the countless billions of other faiths will end up in hell. Not that I even believe there is such a place, but even if I did, the idea of a God to be so narrow in his descision about who enters heaven and who doesen't sounds incredibly rediculous to me. Some will argue "free will", but if free will is to be a Jew, that person will be condemned.
This is not good enough for me. I do stand up for something. It's called reason and common sense. It makes no sense that God would purposely allow so many religions to exist knowing full well ahead of time, because he's omnipotent, and not expect turmoil. Unles he's a mean spirit who likes to watch a good battle between his children.
It's no coincidence that people's faith is dependent upon what part of the world they were raised. If a child is born in India, then there's a good chance he will be raised believing in the Indian religion. If a child is born in Egypt, he or she will most likely subscribe to Islam, and so on. This Muslim kid grows up believing his teachings is the true way to heaven. He practices all the rules bestowed upon him day and night. He is the epitome of the Muslim community in Egypt. He lives to the ripe old age of 94 and has done nothing in his life but good to his bretheren. But, according to Christians, he's gonna suffer in hell for all eternity because he didn't believe Christ as the savior. This makes no sense to me at all. And this is just one example out of literally dozens I can give. Surely God must know this person was raised in an environment where Mohammad was believed the messenger. Surely God understands that no matter how many Christian missionaries visted him to convert him, he would not budge because of his strong convictions in his faith, yet God would still punish this poor soul because he did not believe in Christ as the savior. How sad. If that's the type of God that exists, then I want nothing to do with him. But I feel that kind of God does not exist, and that's why I'm spiritual.
Again, it's not just Christianity, but i wanted to make that point. Surely blowing yourself up with a bomb and killing innocent folks around you is illogical too. Having 72 virgins waiting for you is also rediculous. Since when did heaven all of a sudden become a whore house?....lol
My grandmother is about 104 years old. She is a devout Muslim since a child. She bore 14 children in her life, and never hurt a soul. She prays 5 times a day facing the east everyday to this day. She truly believes in what she practices with every umph within her soul. But I guess when the day comes when she is no longer with us, she'll end up burning in a lake of fire. I doubt it. Sorry, I just can't believe that. I also can't believe that she'll end up anywhere else either. No one really knows where she'll go. And if someone says they know for sure, they are delusional.
If someone knew for sure, we would not be here having a discussion about this. As far as I know, the sky has not opened up and revealed who is right and who is wrong. Only time will tell.
Have read factions co-opted various religions over time for power, money, control just as they've done with governments and banks. However, a person's relationship with whatever they choose to call their deity is within their heart and in the long run can be controlled by no one. People need to be free to find their relationship with the divine in any manner they choose because all religions are pointing us figuratively to the top of the mountain. The variable is how they tell us how to get there.
Yes Konane, we do share the spirtual beliefs. And as you say, the tarnished history of religion has turned many a folks away from it. The universal intelligence is more understading than the conventional god/s in the texts of old.
@ Joker
I can fully accept what you said. It seems any reasonable person should be able to understand the conflicts you raise between various religions.
@ Sully
Glad you are still with us. Glad that you were lucky enough to somehow have the help of your sister-in-law after her death. I wouldn't attempt to explain that, I would just thankfully accept it.
