Moot points in the modern world

Published:

I see there's a considerable stink being raised over whether the Patriot Act gets renewed by the US Congress because of infringements on the privacy of Americans.  I'll confess I'm generally opposed to a statute that allows circumvention of the US Constitution insofar as searches without warrants and abuses by official agencies in matters not involving national security.

However, having said that, I suggest it's a moot point.

I have in front of me a cheap cellular telephone.  But it has a proven capability of recording a conversation between US Border Patrol agents sitting in the next booth in a restaurant.  Taking their pictures, both still, and video.

This is reality.

Maybe runaway technology is a good thing.  Maybe the certainty that we no longer have any privacy will finally provide a motivation for us to behave the ways we should have been behaving all along.  If we believe we have any dark secrets now we're probably wrong in thinking so.

But if this $30 cellular phone will do what it will do, you can bet there are hundreds, maybe thousands of instruments in the hands of businesses, government agencies, and nosy neighbors to assure there's no longer anything worth trying to hide.

Yeah, I oppose searches without warrants, particularly those conducted without my knowledge.  But the fact is, if it happens to me I'll know.  The thumb-sized security camera installed in front of my house to record anyone approaching when I'm gone will get it all down for the record.

I don't have any privacy, you don't have any privacy, the US Border Patrol doesn't have any privacy, and the cop who stops you for a burned out tail-light doesn't have any privacy.

We're all just going to have to start behaving ourselves.

Behaving ourselves? Surely you jest Jack. Were the Jews behaving themselves when they were dragged off to the ovens? That was all sactified by laws passed in Germany only a few decades ago.   Don't you know facism is alive and well only now the plans are for turning this whole planet into a police state? Read Jim Marrs, Alex Jones on the internet. Or how about Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Patrick Henry, and all the rest of our forefathers whom I believe are turning over in their graves right now. Are you going to "behave" when the government says you must take some crazy vaccine or worse a chip implant? We are all asleep like sheep to the slaughter. As for me when it comes down to stand in this line for the chip or that line to the gillotene I guess I'll be in the short line. I'm glad a few brave souls in congress are fighting that stupid Patriot Act which is nothing but a con job to steal our rights. Don't even get me started. . .

I agree with everything you've said, TA. But Americans are going to get what they pay for. Right here among the blogs on LP you can see it almost every day, people willing to trade the US Constitution for temporary 'security'. An aging friend of my likes to observe we've become a country of illiterate, stupid coward/bullies. Judging from the political decisions they've been making for the last half-century I tend to think he's right.

I'm just glad I don't have to live to see the outcome. I'm also glad it's none of my business (defined as anything I can't do anything about)

Thanks for the comment.

. . . none of my business (defined as anything I can't do anything about)": Yes, I suppose this is a good attitude to have blood-pressure-wise and I would do well to remeber it. But I also have a blue ribbon on my mirror that reads "who I am makes a difference". The problem is not knowing what to do at times. But history is full of individuals that accomplished great things all by themselves. Just speaking out and making ppl think like on your blog is doing something Jack. I've copied videos and passed them out and argued with friends. It took 5 yrs. for one close friend to SEE. But I don't blame ppl for being asleep. Since kindergarten they have been brainwashed and indoctrinated. It's not easy to make the gigantic paridigm shift and then once you do it's very lonely. You're doing good work Jack, keep it up. TA
