All nationalistic jingoism aside, I'm relieved they've finally retired the little death-traps.

Overly complex is not a substitute for rugged.

I'm relieved they landed safely too. I have misgivings about the safety of space flight during coming months. There is a comet and several named asteroids heading toward the inner solar system at the same time. There may be debris traveling with them. The sun has been active also.

So has the expense of space exploration improved our way of life?
I would think so.

I think we're better off, as a whole, having the space program, too.
It's still there, just not *this* piece of it. Plenty of unmanned launches still happening.
To parse a phrase from Warren Buffett, we can afford to do anything, but we cannot afford to do *everything*.
Got a few things on the ground that need attention right now.
