UPDATE: Russian Newscaster FIRED After Giving Barack Obama The Finger On Live TV

Tatyana Limanova Russian Newscaster Fired

Tatyana Limanova, one of Russia's most popular and respected newscasters, has been fired from her job at REN TV, after a video of her appearing to give President Barack Obama the middle finger on live TV went viral on the internet.

The incident occurred on Nov. 14, during a segment about Russian President Dmitry Medvedev assuming the chairmanship of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation. Obama had held the position previously, and Limanova raised her middle finger as she read Obama's name.

Limanova said that the incident was an embarrassing misunderstanding -- she did not know that she was on camera and was directing the gesture at studio technicians. "I thought I was out of shot," she said, according to The Telegraph.

The TV station, however, decided to remove her from her position on air. "This does not diminish her guilt and cannot be considered an excuse. The REN TV management views this action as the gravest violation of on-air discipline and a demonstration of unprofessionalism," the channel said, according to RIA.

"A decision has been taken that T Limanova cannot and will not continue to work on the REN TV channel as a presenter," the station said in a statement, according to The Daily Mail.

"Obviously the channel's management decided to view this clumsy curious incident seriously and I completely accept and respect that. Some people viewed it with irony, while others did not. I understand that I damaged the channel and perhaps offended some of the viewers."

Limanova told RIA that English-language media took the video out of context.

"It is a brilliant example of how facts can be interpreted. I have an incredibly positive opinion of President Barack Obama and my gesture had no relation to the respected president of the United States," she told The Telegraph.

I thought it was a bit unfair to dismiss her from her job.
So are they going to fire that Fallon guy for what he did to Bachmann with that song intro? I doubt it. Just a big laugh among the lib newscasters and the lib audience.
How about a newscaster playing one of Hitlers goose step marching songs when they introduce Pres Obama.

They shouldn't fire her for showing how she feels. We have rights here in the good ole U.S.A. , if it happened here she praised by some and codemned by others and then forgotten about. At least for the time being we still have some rights left...!
Good one Jap, I'm sure obammy has thought about the Goose step during his jaunts...!

I will be boycotting Russian Vodka until she gets her job back.
I've been wanting to try that Ketel One stuff anyway but I'm not sure if that's Russian or not so maybe Grey Goose or Absolut or something else.
I'm gonna have about 3 fingers of Jack and think about it right now.
Let's Occupy Red Square in the meantime.

Thanks for your comments Jap69, Maddog10 and rdgnr. I actually believe Ms. Limanova's explanation - maybe it was a set-up by someone on her camera crew who wanted to get her fired but, even if that's true, it was her own unprofessional gesture that got her fired. It's not like she's a newbie - she's a seasoned professional. As such she should have had enough sense to assume while on the air that (a) her mic is always on; and (b) she is always on camera. The video went viral, she made her employer look bad, and she had to answer for her actions. Do you think Sam Shepherd over at Fox News would have been fired if he flipped the bird while reporting a story on the Russian President? Not at all. He would offer a public apology and be suspended for a week.

Jap69, are you really comparing a serious professional newscaster's actions to those of a talk show entertainer and his obviously biased band leader? I like Jimmy Fallon's show but I don't agree with his band leader's actions - playing that song was an insult to Michelle Bachman - it would never have been played for Hillary Clinton that's for sure.

Maddog10, they shouldn't fire her for showing how she feels OFF THE AIR. Thank goodness we have freedom of speech in this country - anyone can go on TV and call the President pretty much anything you want. But when was the last time you saw a news anchor flipped the bird at the Obama on the air?

As much as I disagree with the president, I was heated about this and more offended by people stateside cheering it on. If an American reporter had acted this way during coverage about a foreign leader, there would have been outrage from that nation's citizens -- even those who disliked that leader. We used to have a saying "politics ends at the waters' edge". Foreigners still understand that concept. As one member here put it -- "*I* can call my brother-in-law an S.O.B., but *you* can't." Same goes for the president.
