When the government decided to allow whole generations of families to use the safety net of welfare as a hammock for the rest of their lives in return for their votes.

When the RepubliCON Presidents and Congresses going back to their patron Saint Ronnie of Reagan deregulated their corporate owners businesses and allowed them to outsource the millions of jobs that paid a living wage for the working men and women of America to 3rd world countries where they can pay slave wages to make shoddier products in the pursuit of enhancing their bottom lines at the expense of American workers while selling those products to ignorant American consumers at higher prices.
CONservatives AND RepubliCONS are fond of saying to the unfortunate unemployed masses"Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps"
RIGHT BEFORE THEY TAKE AWAY THEIR BOOTS!

I love those moveon talking points, booby.
Very impressive.
You've won me over.
I'm totally convinced.
I'm gonna start a movement to get those guys' boots back!
Power to the people!
Attica!
Attica!
Attica!
Bush was in cahoots!
Give us back our boots!
We won't sniff your poots!
Give us back our boots!
Stop stealing all our loots!
Give us back our boots!
Attica!
Attica!
Attica!
Of course we'll need somebody to beat on a drum all night for the full effect.
Then we'll top it off with the customary flag desecration and public group masturbation.
That'll teach 'em.

H.L. Mencken had a great quote from back in the '30's or 40's: "FDR's New Deal divided the country into those who work for a living and those who vote for a living." Mencken has a ton of other quotes that are worth looking up on the Net.

That quote caused me to watch a PBS biography via NetFlix on FDR and sure enough it mentioned that FDR instilled the whole social safety net mentality for the first time. As a half way religious person I'm ok w/safety net but it can be abused by the lazy who have no intention of working. Fast forward to LBJ's Great Society/War on Poverty which only made the mess worse. At least Daniel Patrick Moynihan did the right thing by arguing against creating a welfare state where the father figure is supplanted by the state which in turn created an incentive to have more kids out of wedlock. I've received that "Momma's Little Money maker" email that others here have referenced.
Thomas Jefferson was correct when he said humanity can be divided into makers and takers; Frederic Bastiat(1800s) and Adam Smith (1700s) had some great insights into human nature too that are still relevant today.

If you have a society that robs from Peter to pay Paul you can always count on the support of Paul-- George Bernard Shaw
