'Super moon' to light up Saturday night sky

'Super moon' to light up Saturday night sky

A lunar phenomenon known as a super moon is set to light up the night sky on Saturday and into Sunday morning.

A super moon is the result of a full moon occurring at the same time as when the celestial body is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit.   The super moon is set to light up the night sky on Saturday.   The full moon will occur at 4.35am on Saturday morning, and a minute later, the sun and moon will line up to give amateur and professional stargazers a very bright sight to behold. During this time, the moon will be 30 per cent brighter and 14 per cent bigger than an average full moon.   Fears that tidal patterns and other natural elements of the Earth could be affected by the phenomenon have been quashed by experts however.   'Super moons have been happening for billions of years, and nothing particularly special occurs on these dates - except, of course, for a beautiful full moon.

This Saturday's super moon will be the first since March of last year, when the orbiting body was 400km closer to Earth than it will be this weekend.   And those with an interest in all things space won't have to wait long for their next fix, with a solar eclipse due on May 20th.
