I saw someone make a baseball analogy somewhere that made sense.It said something like this:

Picture Obama as a relief pitcher who comes in to relieve the starting pitcher who is pulled after giving up 3 runs. Obama, as a rookie relief pitcher, comes in throwing wildly and immediately gives up 9 more runs. The manager comes out to the mound and says he's going to take him out. But Obama explains that they're losing because of the first pitcher who gave up 3 runs. "Hey, I inherited this mess, we were losing when I got here, I need a few more innings to straighten out this mess the starting pitcher left me."

And that's the core of his whole strategy.
