To catch a ride on a slow moving freight car is to know how to board the rail car from a standing position.
Hop a freight incorrectly could flip you onto the tracks and it could be your life or limb from there.
I worked on the railroad for a couple years and that is one of the first things they taught me.
Also knew a bull on the railroad for many years and the stories he use to tell. He probably started on the railroad back in the 30s.
