Only a dumb-ass would not know that retarded is derogatory. Anyone with common sense can look at an down syndrome person and know something is wrong. I have a niece that way. I've seen a woman with 4 or 5 kids that way. I have never asked, if they were her kids or not. I would be too embarrassed to ask the question. We have a young man whom I met 10 or 12 years ago, that worked at Bennigan's as a dishwasher. Then last year I saw him with the Publix store manager coming out of her office. Calling him by his name, she asked me if I knew him. I told her yes, that I knew him from Bennigans. She smiled and replied, I just hired him as a bagger, I bumped him and replied, fantastic, a good man!! He must be in his 30's. I have a special feeling for them, I don't look at them as retards, just special.
