The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A major earthquake occurred about 40 km (25 miles) WSW of L'Esperance Rock, Kermadec Islands and about 1200 km (750 miles) NNE of WELLINGTON, New Zealand at 4:39 AM MDT, May 16, 2006 (10:39 PM local time in New Zealand). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. No damage is expected.
