Blacks being in jail and having debt are more related to the decisions they made but there is a disproportionate rate of incarceration for petty crimes. We all have debt for various reasons. However, this deal with credit checks and employers is what really strikes me. I do believe it's a way to possibly "profile" an individual in terms of decision-making patterns and responsibility.

"So, what are you saying, Lucky?" Well, employers may look at one's credit and determine that you're a liability...won't get to work "on time" if you have a bad history of not paying your bills "on time". How efficient is this, though? I know people with tons of debt that are at work on time and don't call in. Back in the day, employers simply wanted good, reliable workers that knew what to do, or, could be trained and learned the job quickly.

The "credit" check back then was word of mouth. If ole Joe vouched for old Frank, then Frank got hired and busted his a**. That's all that mattered...they cared less about whether Frank payed his light bill or furniture payment on time. Today's employers are very sophisticated...slick.
