Trolley cars were a profitable enterprise in earlier days. Transported a lot of people in metro cities. Auto and gasoline industry could not have that so they bought out the trolley car industry and shut them down.
Use to be a lot of rail lines that went to the outlying communities that transported passengers and goods to the metro cities and they died out.
Public access to mass transport pretty much died out. All these large road systems are a nightmare to auto travelers in big metro areas.
