Largest Powerball jackpot in 10 months
By Todd Northrop
Just a week after the Mega Millions lottery had players across America scrambling for tickets for a mega jackpot, the Powerball multi-state lottery game is poised to do the same thing.
Saturday night's Powerball drawing was the 10th consectuive drawing without a top prize winner, increasing the next jackpot to $218 million, with a lump-sum cash option of $109.9 million.
The next drawing will take place Wednesday at 11:00 pm Eastern Time (8:00 pm Pacific). The winning numbers will be published at USA Mega (www.usamega.com) minutes after the drawing.
The last time the multi-state Powerball jackpot reached the current level was on June 2, 2010, when a $262 million jackpot was taken down by one ticket sold in Ohio. The winner later claimed the prize anonymously as a $134.9 million lump-sum cash payout.
The Powerball lottery results Saturday were 6, 22, 34, 43, and 45, with Powerball number 23. The Power Play number was 2.
Even though there was no jackpot winner, nine players matched the first five numbers for a $200,000 prize: 1 from Colorado, 1 from Connecticut, 1 from Florida, 1 from Indiana, 1 from Kentucky, 1 from New Jersey, 1 from New York, 1 from North Carolina, and 1 from North Dakota.
Two of the second-prize tickets, from North Carolina and North Dakota, were purchased with the Power Play option, so their prizes will be automatically increased to $1 million each.
For an extra $1 per ticket, players can purchase Power Play, which increases any non-jackpot prize the ticket wins by the Power Play number drawn that evening. In the event of a second-prize win, Power Play always multiplies the prize by 5 times.
Powerball is played in 42 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
Great just great....now i have to keep my fingers crossed until thursday morning just to see if i hit . I would stay up late wednesday night ,but i'm gettin too old for that....BEST OF LUCK TO EVERONE
For everyone that plays for the cash option, the cash option for wed ($109 million )would be equivalent if the mega was advertised with a $172 million jackpot. I always play a few extra when the jackpot gets over $200 million but sometimes forget that Powerballs cash option hovers around 50% of advertised jackpot whereas Mega hovers around 63%. Not that I would complain with winning either though. Good luck to everyone!
It's been awhile since Oklahoma has had a Jackpot winner. So I am claiming this jackpot!!!!!
Good luck everyone.
You have to know there's going to be more participants in office pools for this one!
I hope another group hits this one too.
I'm taking this one.
Office pool ready to go for this one...10 of us, so $109 million would do just fine!
you got that right mightwin, always compare the cash, as powerball just puts their in govt bonds longer to appear bigger
thro 109m cash jackpot m sure would be nice to bring to lawyers office , thro its nonething compared to Mega millions Cash jackpots of 240m and 203m we just had this year
by the way, powerball biggest ever cash jackpot amount was 177.2m cash , february 18, 2006, yet marketed as $365 million, rather sad when MM beats Powerball Cash Record Twice in 1 year within 3 months of each other at that LOL , powerball even has a stupid Annuity Jackpot cap, once it hits 390m, or 25m over old recold, a Jackpot cap goes into effect, all that money that could of made it fly up to 400m range, or more, goes instand into the 5-0 winner pool, but that bonus prize only gets paid out on whatever draw their is jackpot winner.
sure it be nice to win 5-0 and get even more money, but am playing for the jackpot, not 2nd's
if they ever do hit the jackpot cap 390m is when it actives, , And it rolls again somehow by pure insane luck , they are idiots, as they would of passed up marketing a 500m buck jackpot only to market a 415m jackpot !
, they are in truth only hurting their sells by a jackpot cap, and with their cash record of 177.2m vs 240m mega millions, They have no chance in hell of ever catching up to mega millions cash record.
they have higher odds too, so powerball a sick joke to have its cash record broken twice this year alone by mega millions with less odds
MMs is the heavy weight, powerball the more clever one, its great at covering up its weakness by looking bigger then it really is.
plus i think some group of 8 won that one 177m to, but their no way in hell am playing in a group LOL, if someone tryed to sue me, i would not fight them in court and i would kill them. as that's how i treat thefts who rob me"wrong person"
Frankly, I could care less about the differences between Mega Millions or Powerball. Although, because Mega Millions was here in Maryland before Powerball, and I would have to drive across the D.C. line to play Powerball. I JUST WANT TO WIN A HUGE JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know my day is coming. When its all said and done, when I walk in the door with my attorney and provide the ticket, the account number where my Cash Option can be wired, shake the hands of the Lottery Officials whether they are Powerball or Mega Millions officials will not matter in the least.
Best of luck to everyone also, but it is time for Pennsylvania to have a big Jackpot Winner!
I so Second that idea!! Dpoly! Lets win one for PA!!!!
Well, the east coast and the west coast had winners. Now, it is New Mexico's turn to win. However, good luck to the person or persons who win, and I am sure -- with this economy -- he or she could use the money.
Good luck everyone....Indiana is claiming this prize.....Indy specificallyNewbie on the block!
I will be taking this jackpot off of everyones hands this thursday morning. It is coming home to Oregon. Good luck to all who play especially me!!!!!!!!!!!!!-weshar75
Welcome Tulip2red!
PB jackpot winner will be in Texas this week. Just you wait and see.
Mine all mine!!!
Thanks for the vote of confidence! When I do win, I'll think of you and your amazing ability of predicting the winner.
I bought the winning ticket today. There's no stopping it now.
Where have I heard this before?
Yea!
Actually, my vision showed the winner east of Austin.... Maybe a bit north/northwest of Houston....
Things here will get extremely interesting if NY wins again!
In every single one of these topics by a dozen different posters.
Welcome Tulip2red !
Best of luck to you, I hope you have a $200,000 winner ............. I am hoping that my $1 wager gets the Jackpot for me however !
It has been awhile for kansas also...i would like to see one person win it from a small town instead of a larger city.
DREAMS DO COME TRUE!!!!!!!
If the winner's in Texas, I hope it's somebody from Cut and Shoot or if not there then Gun Barrel City.
That would drive the libs nuts.
They would go into tree-hugging convulsions.
Maybe I should move to Gun Barrel City.
Trouble is it's too far to drive to work from there.
Just make a big deal about moving to Gun Barrel City after you win.
There'll be harmonic convergences all over San Francisco and shrines built to worship Charlie Sheen.
They'll nominate Stuart Smalley for President.
Michelle will demand that McDonalds drop hamburgers and serve only Kashi.
It'll be great.
Oh how I wish the jackpot winner came from Houston, namely me. The things I will do with such money, after maybe splurging a million bucks or so, my future estate lawyer and I would have a LOT to talk about.
****Is it wrong to dream? Statistics be <snip>ed!****
Hey, we urban city folk are not all cut from the same cloth. Anyway, I sure hope the winner is from Houston ***ahem*** me****cough. 2 ways I cast my lot, the office pool with 10 of us or myself with my own pick, $70,000,000 after taxes by myself or split 10 ways, I shall not complain, definitely more money in the bank than I had previously.
***Yes, I know bad in math, tell that to Chris Shaw*****
If I don't win it, I'm wishing someone else will, either way I'm going to get my wish.
I've been lurking around The Post for a while. Decided to open up my own account, so that when I win I could say that I am the first lottery post Jackpot winner.
Welcome abroad.
I used to lurk around like you until I finally decided "what the heck" back in '06
I'm going to win this!
Welcome to Lottery Post Cheetara.
Best of luck to ya!
I will not be surprised!!!
for the next draw, pick small numbers, something like 5-13-20-35-52 - QP
I'm surprised if it won't be won in Florida. Looking back at the total winners (all prize levels) Florida lottery players dominate pretty much each and every time(probably cuz Mega isn't sold there). New York and Pennsylvania are up there too near the top each time.
Oh yeah!! We already know what the posts will be about! LOL
I'm gonna make a point of going over to Cut N Shoot just to buy a ticket. It's just across the interstate from me. Actually, I planned on being that way Tuesday for an oil change.
Next PB winner... ticket bought in Cut n Shoot, Texas. (Nice to see so many Houstonians here)
As a side note, Kashi gives me indigestion. Every. Single. Thing I've eaten with the Kashi brand on it gave me a tummy ache. Blech.
I need to win this one. I'm going to throw a big party once I win. U all re invited & u got paid for coming to this party.
Moet, Caviar and non stop music for a whole week. May the God's Will be seeing this party happen. Amen
I spend $1 on each drawing and can only hope and dream that one day soon my dreams will come true...i've heard it only takes a dollar and a dream....well i got my dollar qp and my dreams so maybe it will come up and be my turn to be the big winner, one of us lottery posters needs a win, hopefully me me though ;)
DREAMS DO COME TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does Greyhound go to Germany?
I didn't know that the Powerball continues to increase. I didn't know why the Powerball's lump sum is only about 50% of the announced jackpot versus about 60+% in Mega Millions.
They are 2 different games.
Guten Tag, Time Traveler, wie geht es Ihnen?
2 diff games indeed
powerball and mega millions use to be epic enemys, drawing battle lines across whole states borders form each other states.
now they moved in together! , and maybe 1 day will have a child born of their union, some higher odds , cost 2 buck a ticket 3rd lotto game they said maybe would happen.
guest the lottery's are taking their sweet time doing backroom planning of it if it ever goes down.
thro as of right now current 2 games are filling my needs just fine for a high jackpot to bet on. hope they keep it up.
as for 218, if it rolls, it should roll to about 255m to 265m range, guested by must recent past history of powerball sales data in 200m range
say what you may about powerball. i have played both of them for years steadily and i have had more wins on powerball than i have ever on mega. i have never had a win of a hundred dollars on mega and several on powerball. my last big win on powerball was 406 dollars. i will take a jackpot from either one but i am luckier on powerball.
i went to germany once and couldn't get anyone to tell me the rules in english so i could play a game. so sad.
Why do Mega Millions and Powerball show different Cash Option amounts for similar-sized jackpots?
A fixed percentage of every Mega Millions and Powerball ticket sold goes into its CASH jackpot. The cash jackpot is all the money that the lottery has on hand from the sale of tickets in the game. If a player chooses the cash option, then the lottery will pay entire cash amount to the winner (less income tax withholding amounts required by federal and state laws).
The lottery also offers an ANNUITY jackpot option that can help reduce taxes and offers the winner a 100% guaranteed income stream over time. The two games offer different types of annual income streams, giving the players more options. If a winner elects the annuity option, then the lottery will invest the entire cash amount before taxes are deducted. The difference between the CASH jackpot and the ANNUITY jackpot is the interest earnings that build over time. The Powerball annuity jackpot earns more interest for two reasons.
Since the two games' jackpots are invested differently, if the CASH jackpots are the same, the Powerball jackpot will pay a larger ANNUITY over time than Mega Millions. If the ANNUITY value of the jackpots are the same, then Mega Millions' CASH jackpot will be larger than Powerball's CASH jackpot.
The CASH jackpot amounts present the true present-day values of the prizes. A winner who wishes to take the CASH jackpot should compare only the CASH jackpot amounts. The ANNUITY jackpot amounts will be important for those winners who plan to select a long-term, fully guaranteed income stream.
"The winner has a contract with the states to pay the annual prize payment, no matter what happens to the securities."
That's a red flag in my book. I don't like the government's track record with handling money and I don't have complete faith in their guarantees as of late. Especially with a chief executive as unstable as the one we have now and state legislatures similarly comprised. When they declare a national or state emergency and suspend all obligations I don't intend to be under their thumb voluntarily.
I'll take the cash.
I agree with you 100%. The deficit is in the trillions and the government needs band aids to seal the dam, well, not with my lottery winnings the wouldn't! GIMME THE CASH!
***We shall pay you in annuities, NO YOU WILL NOT!*****
Kashi makes a frozen pizza too, believe it or not (barf).
I'll be watchin for a winner in Cut n Shoot in the News Forum, Piaceri.
Good luck to ya!
I run an office pool of 13 and I work in a state government office in my state capital city! If it worked for the MegaMillions, maybe it will work for us! I've been running this pool for several years and it's about time we won.
good luck to everyone for tonights drawing .. i plan on having a meet and greet for those daring enough to wear their lotterypost bikini's {in the tri-state area} [w/todd hosting] should i win
but a side of caution to those that just LOVE LOVE LOVE ANNUITY payments .. i spoke with someone in the finances and while this option was good for those playing lotteries in the early 80s .. not so the case now .. the states and the gov will be your bed-mates for life [you don't want that, they both have the gonorrhea and chlamydia [respectively]] it will appear that you have the ultimate payoff but with the the yearly INCREASES of taxes, you will end up netting LESS than the seemingly low CASH OPTION payouts .. another thing, 1% of annuity winners actually can live and are content with that measly yearly payout ... but the funny thing is when you are THAT RICH some thing called common sense kicks in and you kinda want your money NOW to do fun things with [imagine, getting $1mil a year knowing that you have $189million out there that you can't touch] - what happens is that the remaining 99% end up borrowing against their future payouts - that's a third person in your sheets [this one has syphilis] .. so ... net net .. pound for pound .. dollar for dollar ... TAKE THE CASH PAYOUT - take a million and chop it up and invest where there's a promised 4% growth ...
just my two cents .. can you tell i don't trust the government
please tell us that you have a SIGNED copy of all the members that are included .. and have sorted out who the regular members are and those that won't pay but will get paid?
that'll be so sad to have a lotterypost winner - win but end up in court convincing the judge that there indeed are only 13 and not 18 like the other five [they'll pop up] are sure to contend
you mean there is no stopping me now i have the winning ticket, been waiting for a long time, and mind you i do feel lucky
good luck to my LP's
Es könnte besser gehen - darum spiele ich ja auch Lotto wie zB. Powerball - aber man sollte ja nicht meckern. Viel Glück!
I am sorry to say but I think this Powerball belong to me "I HAVE THE WINNING TICKET TONIGHT" But good luck to everyone else!!!
I just bought the winning quick pick.
I am destined to win tonight's powerball. Doesn't matter how many tickets sold, all that money are all going into my bank account regardless.
You too? Weird, but I have a hyper feeling as well. Could there be two winners?
****Ready set, go!
According to the quantum theory everything is interconnected and that implies that the handling that I do - making
coffee or tea for example - and the way I do it, can influence the outcoming of a lottery drawing.
So I have direct influence on the numbers the will be drawn.
If I make everything the right way - I will win the jackpot. But what is the right way?
That drives me nuts.
Wish everyone the best, hoping it rolls a few more times, then it will be in the range that I play it for!!
You are so correct ridge, and I'd even go so far to say I think this country is to the point where it is almost like some South American banana republic like Argentina under Juan and Evita Peron; you know, the kind where anybody with any sense will be trying as hard as they can to get their money out of the country before it gets confiscated? With me, it wouldn't be just the cash option, nor just the trust. It'd be foreign LLC inside a foreign trust, and eventually into a foreign bank account. There aren't many countries left that I'd feel half assed good about my money being there, but there are a handfull still.
Good luck to you also. 'preciate the thought of coming to your victory party, but I'm one that tends to respect people's privacy, and that goes double for celebs. You know, " do unto others as you would have them do unto you." I even walked out of a cosy little four table place in the Quarter in New Orleans back in '78 because the only other patrons in the place were Mick and Bianca Jagger; and at the time, I was as big a fan as you could get.
Finally, I share your distrust of the gobbermint in a big way. Corruption I can deal with. It's evil I'm scared of.
and its over, checking the lastest data form powerball website
Indiana Lottery had 1 winner
Beep, at lest its not new york :P
intresting florida had a lot more overall winners then new work. guest when they could not play the 2 massive mega millions jackpots this year, , they got the hunger for powerball and buyed like crazy
hopeful its just a single person and not a other group win thro
- $3,736,600 for the state of indiana ,. <snip> you indiana
if they take the cash, state rate of 3.8 that is
atfer 35% mnax fed tax and state tax added in
the winner will take home 67,698,400 cash option to hes bank
Figures...the one time I don't play a major jackpot game and the sole winner comes from my state.
Oh well...
I'd recommend puttin a little bit o Jack in your coffee to start the day off right.
First off, huge congrats to whichever Indianan has the winning jackpot ticket. God has blessed you, and I pray that He continue to bless and protect you through the tribulations originating in many places from all directions. May He guide you to one of the very few honest lawyers and financial consultants in existence. Take care of yourself FIRST.
Now, as for Florida, I suspect with all the retirees and a border state (Alabama) with no lottery, that there is a good possibility that they have more lottery sales than any other lottery in the country. FWIW, I also know some dumba$$es here in my state that still go play powerball in Florida because they have no state income tax, not realizing that they still will have to put that 6% under the golden dome in the A-T-L anyway. Tourists play it a lot, and I have read that there is always quite a contingent from Columbia, Panama, etc. that make a trip to visit relatives about the same time a big jackpot builds up in Mega or Powerball. Plus, I think Fla is now about 3rd highest population of any state now.
Has anyone ever noticed that the Florida lotto hardly ever gets over about 25 mil or so before there is a winner. Sure sign that people play heck out of it. I see both Cali and NY getting up over 50 mil a lot.

Yeah, they speak German over there, believe it or not.
Someone should have warned you.
