$325 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot increased before draw date

Powerball

Will set US all-time record if no winner Saturday

By Todd Northrop

As a result of brisker than expected ticket sales, lottery officials announced today that the Powerball jackpot has been raised from $310 million to $325 million for Saturday's drawing.

The jackpot increase immediately launched Saturday's drawing to #9 on the United States all-time biggest jackpots list.  It will be the third-largest Powerball jackpot ever.  The jackpot's $202.9 million cash option is the highest in Powerball history.

With the new Powerball enhancements implemented in mid-January, the game has been redesigned to generate bigger jackpots and more millionaires.

The Powerball jackpot has been growing since Dec. 28 and has rolled 13 times.

If there is no Grand Prize winner Saturday night, the estimate for next Wednesday's drawing (Feb. 15, 2012) will be $415,000,000 — the largest lottery jackpot in United States history.

Powerball tickets are $2 per play.

Saturday's Powerball winning number results will be published at USA Mega (www.usamega.com) minutes after the 11:00 pm (Eastern Time) drawing takes place.

Let's keep it real people. One ticket is all you need.

I overheard a guy making a remark along the lines that people will play PB this week and not have food the next. True.

I remember a craze awhile back when the jackpot got real big....the machines were smoking trying to print all of the tickets people were buying.

It rolled that day and I believe went out the next draw. Sales were more than brisk, they were steaming.

Don't go overboard. Remember the odds but also remember it takes one ticket to win. It's okay to dream but don't lose your friggin mind.

And that folks is the public service announcement for today.

Oh and btw, I'm not playing. Razz

If this rolls over which I think it will, it will definitely set a new record $400m plus!

Wow! "If there is no Grand Prize winner Saturday night, the estimate for next Wednesday's drawing (Feb. 15, 2012) will be $415,000,000 — the largest lottery jackpot in United States history."

That would be amazing! I almost want it to rollover just to see that, but I think I'll be happy with JUST $325,000,000!

On a whim, I stopped by one of our local convenience stores this afternoon and picked up a $2 QP. To my surprise the ticket read Est. CV of 202,900,000! Seems like it has been a while since I remember the lottery raising the level of the jackpot mid drawing. Someone is definitely going to be very happy this weekend. Good luck to all!

If this jackpot roll several more times, it could reach a billion dollars.  If that happens, I could see MUSL putting a cap on it and adding more money to the 2nd place winners with powerplay.

Like I said on the eve of the last drawing, this would be a great weekend to grab the MM or your state's local lotto jackpot and slip off into oblivion. Good luck. Don't go crazy.

the record cash jackpot is $240 million, which is currently held by Mega Millions

will mm could have it record broken, that will be fun to watch. the lottery fever buying of 400m plus jackpot!

anytime cash jackpot"real jackpot" gets above 200m, you have a epic jackpot on your hands!

am going to buy ether 2 or 3 tickets, as buy 5 bucks was my max for 300m jackpots , so i up my limit to 6 bucks  for now LOL.

if it rolls, , i up it to 10 bucks,

i have to limit it to 10 bucks or 5 tickets max , even thro a 400m jackpot would more then likly make me get a 20 out LOL. we see if it rolls.

btw, that 415m is a low ball, just like 193.4 million cash jackpot was a lowball, any time jackpot gets above 300m,. they always Lowball  real amount,  and up it when near draw and had time to guest real total sells by end of draw, with a few days of selling to make a spot on guest.

i remb mm 240 cash jackpot, kept being upped like what 3 times before draw, and even atfer the draw, it was upped to final cash amount of 240, They just could not low ball it ever time :P

Yeah, expect as I posted it, it dawned on me how ridiculous the notion if "grabbing" a lotto jackpot is. Like, "ooh, this looks nice... I'll have one of those...and if there is room in the basket, go ahead and grab a lottery jackpot, too."

Oh well, silly thoughts. I knew what I meant.

Artist77's avatarArtist77

I agree and think anyone who wins the MM or any other lottery now will be (almost) ignored now till the big PB hits (so I will settle for MM).

i like this ,but why would they do that instead of just building up the JP ?

I agree, people loose their heads when the Jackpot get really big. A friend from OK and I were just talking tonight, he said that he was at a place In OK on the I40 Interstate, and people were talking about how much they were playing for PB for Saturday, and it was Thousands of dollars, they were hoping to win something back or they wouldn't have any money for food the next week. Now Come On People, thats taking it to the crazy side or taking mortgages out on your home so that you think it's going to give you a edge. Play within you means, if you can only afford $4.00 on Powerball and $2.00 on Mega Millions then thats what it it is. Or don't play one of them, play the one you want to play the most that time and the next time play the other one. My husband and I have a set amount we play, we don't go over that amount no matter how high the pots get.

Good Luck to everyone Playing Mega Millions  tonight or those playing PowerBall on Saturday.

Nita & Bruce keep your fingers crossed that we get lucky and hit the PowerBallParty

I want to see a billion dollar jackpot, the media will lose their mind if that happens. I don't know how much I would throw at that, but it would be significant.

There is a guy here in my town who no one really knows who he is, but everyday at the same store, he has slips already there, and plays thousands of dollars in 3 digit, 4 digit, Keno and other lottery every day. He played $8,000 in one day the clerk told me. I can only imagine how much money he is going to throw at this.

If this hits $500 million I am going around the neighborhood and starting a lottery club.

Artist77's avatarArtist77

I always could afford to play a little more but I never buy more than two Pb tickets per drawing (usually one). It only takes one.  But it seems to me I recall reading that a lot of winners seem to say they purchased  somewhere between $ 20-60 worth of tickets.  That is too much for me. I see more than a few people in DC (mostly retirement age) who look like they have little money playing some keno lottery game (maybe the same game with the horses on the screen? Does not interest me.) and spending $60 or more at once. Always shocks me.  Very hardcore players who give you a dirty look if you get in their way just to get your single ticket.

Oh my word!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What the heck is a soul supposed to do with such an amount?! On a second thought, wrong questionROFL

As one member on this post mentioned, 1 ticket should suffice. I predict should anybody win this Saturday, it would be a single ticket holder. Should it roll over, it will still be a single ticket holder.

Now, WHY do I have a feeling that the lottery officials will PRESSURE the owner to do a press interview? No trusts, since they have to parade a winner and justify the increase in price in so doing?

Oh dear, this might turn out to be more than anybody would bargain for.

Maybe so, but in many states it is clearly written in the rules that a winner may claim either by trust, corporation or even anonymously. They have to follow those rules.

Despite the possible pressure, any winner that has already had a gameplan in mind should definitely stick to it.

The way the economy might go, it may not be that bad of an idea after all. That much gold is a bit excessive though. 10% in gold and other precious metals. 5% in Liquid Funds, 75% in Stocks, 10% in Bonds. Invest in Bonds with caution, some analysists are still expecting the bond bubble to burst. The US economy might be looking a little better but we are not out of the woods yet.

The problem with gold currently is it is at historic sky high prices and trending downwards, that's not to say it won't shoot up tomorrow, but the trend is down and the price is very high. Were it me I'd be looking at real estate and stocks, they've been beaten up quite a bit the last few years and there are a ton of deals out there for someone with lots of cash and a long time horizon.

Good point on real estate and you definitely ain't kidding about the long term. Agreed that gold is wickedly priced at the moment, but it is still lower than the old high from the early 1980's if you factor in inflation. Might be a good idea to wait for it to come back down a little bit before anyone looking to buy, invests in some.

It will be two tickets that win and from states that haven't had the chance to win. It will draw up the media for them and folks around these forums will still chastise the winners if they do a press conference or mention what they plan to do with the money. We are so wonderful at telling others how to spend their money or how to invest it, that is why each week we lose because we don't want anyone to tell us how to invest/spend.

I think someone needs to check the CAP rules because there is one and its true that the 2nd tier will increase once it hits cap...I think its 500 mil but again it is a matter of accurately investigating it.

$400?! omfg I surely hope he wins something because I'd be sick if I didn't. $325M does unnatural things to ordinary people.

Good luck everyone. Remember to breath

1.) Making statements against religion in a forum where most of the readers accept religious freedom. = FAIL. Besides how do you know God is not pulling the strings on lotto winners? last time I checked, God has his hand in everything.

2.) You so sure about that? Open your eyes a little and you might see families and even entire communities that still support and look out for each other. It has become even more common place now that times have been hard the past few years.

3.) Good luck to you too.

Not stereotyping. I lived with a bully for 22 years. It took a lot of counseling to get my self esteem back. Bullies justify ugly and negative comments to people with "honesty".  If that is your "honesty", then no thanks but you can keep it. True honest and honorable people treat others like they would like to be treated. You are in epic fail with each post. And every time you post again, you dig yourself deeper. happens all time bro

anytime you see jackpot above 300m , sells are so good, lottery always, gives a low ball number,

hell that record cash mm jackpot last year went up like 3-4 times, and by draw it self, it was raised to final 240m cash, yes we didn't even know final amount to atfer LOL.

if it rolls it be like this all weekend/

415m jackpot raised to 440 m, rasied again next day to 460 m,   then to like 480 million by draw nite

and atfer it won it be like 490 m   just you watch, it happen like clock work.

when sell records are set, lottery always plays it self and lowballs the amounts.

, also their is a biger chance we could have more then 1 winning ticket,  2 tickets  can win it, if so many people play

however i doubt  a group with just 1 ticket will win it over majority of solo players.

Judging from the number of second place winners, it could be a while before anyone wins the jackpot.  Before the price increase, it was common for both MM and PB to have 10 or more second place winners for at least one drawing before the jackpots were won.

When it's won, it going to be a big let down for those folks who think they deserve to win, especially if they think the winners are less deserving than themselves.

Actually, I heard that ages ago from a very old Irishman at the bar in an Irish joint in Chicago.

He was sittin' at the bar with an empty beer glass and the barkeep asked him if he wanted another and he said no. I had seen him looking in his wallet just prior to this so I knew he didn't have any more money.

I told the barkeep to get him one on me and when he gave it to him and told him I bought it for him he smiled at me and raised his glass and said "May your givin' hand never fail ya, lad."

I never forgot that.

Babel

There are 175,223,510 possible combinations. Assuming you could get 1 number set printed per second it would take 2,028 days, 1 hour, 11 minutes, and 50 seconds  to get every combination, assuming the store never closed and you never slept. Doing so would cost you $350,447,020 and return $64,166,120 in lower tier prizes plus the jackpot of $202,900,000 for a loss of $83,380,900 before considering the tax on the winnings.

When it's won, it going to be a big let down for those folks who think they deserve to win, especially if they think the winners are less deserving than themselves.

Figuring out what should happen according to probability is easy. Figuring out what will happen is a bit harder.

For the last drawing the advertised jackpot increased $50 million, which was about $33 million in cash. Putting $33 million into the jackpot pool at  $0.64 per ticket requires selling a little over 51 million tickets. Since the odds of winning the 2nd place prize are about 1 in 5.1 million we would expect to have had 10 winners.

Expected sales for tonight's drawing suggest sales of about  73 million tickets. That can be expected to result in 14 2nd place winners. About 40% of the possible combinations should be played, leaving about 60% unplayed. That means a rollover is about 50% more likely than a winner. Of course it all depends on the numbers that are drawn.
