Man credits fortune cookie for $1M lottery win

Massachusetts Lottery

William Johnson from Southwick, Mass. wasn't expecting much when he cracked open a fortune cookie last week after finishing dinner with his wife. "You will soon come into a lot of gold," the slip of paper read.

While most of us would be inclined to dismiss the prediction, Johnson decided to do just the opposite. The following day, feeling lucky, Johnson bought a $10 Massachusetts Millionaire Mania scratch-off ticket and promptly forgot about it.

A few days later he encountered the scratch-off ticket again and decided to take his chances. Fortunately, in this little twist, it turns out Johnson had hit the $1 million jackpot.

Instead of collecting the money over time, Johnson and his wife have decided to take the lump sum payout of $650,000 on Monday. The couple is entertaining the thought of buying a lake house, but hasn't yet fully decided on what they will do with the money. The store in Agawam where Johnson bought his ticket will receive a $10,000 commission on the sale.

According to the lottery's website, the actual odds for winning the scratch-off game are about 1 in 3.5 million.

There should be a law that sushi joints have fortune cookies too.

I got in a big fight about that one night.

They should have to bread all that fish and deep fry it too.

They might be "free" with the meal, but you can bet no chinese person is going to give you anything for free.

You probably could buy a box of them from the same place Chinese restaurants buy them.

Some grocery store chains carry boxes of them. Giant carries them.

I remember that story. It's great for winning a lower tier prize, but if it matched the big jackpot, it would be divided amongst 110 people, diluting your winnings.

Thanks for the tip. Someone had to choose those numbers and tonight could be their lucky night.

Diluted winning numbers are BETTER than losing numbers.

I had Chinese food last night, and I got two fortune cookies. The fortunes have six numbers, so more then likely I will play them in the Powerball with the last number as the power ball number. Who cares if it's dumb luck as long as the jackpot check doesn't bounce.Party

How'd you get a fortune cookie with Japanese food?

I got in a big brawl in a sushi joint one time about that very issue.

They told me only Chinamen give you fortune cookies.

I need to have my fortune cookies too, it might say something good today. He is so lucky to win the scraff off tickets. He needs to plan about his finances, because if he is not going to spend it wisely the money will just slip out of his hands fast and might be gone before he even knows it.

It was the reassaurance from the fortune cookie message that really boosted his confidence in believing that he is lucky and would win. That's why some people have a rabbit's foot, a horse shoe, or a four leaf clover leaf that they think will bring them good luck. When in fact it, you already have it inside of you. Every single person does. You just have to instill faith in yourself and believe.

Some people would just ignore or think nothing of it if they ever came across a message like that. But he did the complete opposite. Notice in the paragraph it says "The following day, Johnson felt lucky and went out and bought a ticket, and then he forgot about it. That's the last step in the law of attraction or believing. When you let go of not thinking about it. You don't obsess about it or have any sort of doubts. But you keep it in the back of your mind. And most of the time, your desire or goal comes to you when you least expect it.

When you keep thinking that you have no luck. That's the results you will keep getting back every time.
