Two brothers who just hit the lotto jackpot have their mother to thank.
Jay Young and Christopher Saddler of Garfield Heights, Ohio, played the Ohio Lottery's Pick 5 last Friday, using the numbers their mother, Betty Burton, suggested. "Mom gave me the numbers to play, and I gave the numbers to Chris so we both decided to get a ticket," Young told Ohio lottery officials.
As usual, mother knew best. Each brother won $25,000 — that's $17,750 after taxes.
Ohio Lottery officials said that Young and Saddler often rent and flip properties and plan on using most of the money for a new investment. Still, the brothers were adamant that they will be using some of their newfound fortune to treat their mom, too. They haven't decided yet what gift would be appropriate to thank Burton for the winning picks.
Young says he may even consult his mom before playing Wednesday's $301 million Powerball drawing. "I play periodically, and I pick the numbers or I get them from my mother," Young said. "She's the lucky charm."
Ohio's Pick 5 game is a five-digit numbers game that lottery players sometimes refer to as "Quinto", differentiating it from pick-5 lotto jackpot games. It is played like the Pick 3 and Pick 4 numbers games, except with five digits.
(Ohio does also have a pick-5 lotto jackpot game called "Rolling Cash 5".)
In Pick 5, players can choose up to five numbers, each from 0-9, and they also select the amount they want to wager (either $0.50 or $1.00) and the type of match they would need to win. To win $25,000 in Pick 5, like the brothers did, a player would wager $0.50 on a straight bet, meaning all five numbers on their ticket would have to match all the numbers drawn, in the exact order they were drawn. Had the brothers wagered $1.00, their payout would have been $50,000 each — the highest payout offered in the game.
Pick 5 drawings results, as well as those from all of the other Ohio Lottery games, are published on Lottery Post's Ohio Lottery Results page soon after each drawing. All the possible ways to win the game, as well as the prize payout amounts, can be viewed by clicking the Payouts link located next to the winning numbers.
