A Michigan woman nearly threw away a $2 million winning instant game lottery ticket she received for her birthday.

It was the best birthday gift of her life, she just didn't know it. Lucky for her, her husband wouldn't let her throw it away without double-checking it first.

The husband and wife claimed the lucky prize this week in Lansing but stayed anonymous. The man said he likes to give her lottery tickets for her birthday and picked up some at Kassa's Market in Harrison Township.

She scratched the $20 Multiplier Spectacular ticket and thought it was no good so she went to throw it away. Before she could do that, her husband grabbed it and looked for himself. Then he double checked it at a local retailer.

"We don't consider ourselves to be lucky, so this was a nice surprise," he said.

The couple visited the Michigan State Lottery headquarters on Tuesday night to claim their prize. They took a one-time lump sum of roughly $1.3 million from their lottery winnings, as opposed to an annuity with 30 annual payments of roughly $67,000.

The couple said they plan to use the money toward their children's college tuition.

Great story !! Kudos to the lucky couple.

Sounds like my wife and I(except winning $2 mill part)... Now she has the lotto app on her phone and checks the tickets that way in addition to both of us doing the visual inspection.

Congratulations!   Forgot about the anonymous part, but no great loss couldn't find winners section on Michigan website anywhere.

Was wondering about their ages then could ascertain as to why they took the cash option--just speculating I suppose.

WTG Todd.  Two feel good stories in one day!

I would like to thank all previous players who have thrown away, lost, and discarded winning scratch-offs.  Most likely the money has gone to good causes.

Mega Millions and Power Ball are different. Unclaimed prize money goes back to the States. Then the State decides where the winnings go. Most likely good causes such as education.

That is why I scan EVERY ticket I get. The ones I found tended to be the same value of the ticket, not complaining.

I always love reading about winners. I'm so happy for them and it also reinforces thoughts that someday I can be a big winner also.

Michigan is kind of funny.  You can request to remain anonymous if you win $10,000 or more and it is a Michigan only game.  So, Lotto 47 yes, Powerball no.  Most, if not all, scratch offs meet the requirement as long as it the win is $10,000 or more.

True, however if not for him on this particular occasion..

Which begs another question MeatMan, who then stands behind every Unsuccessful  man?
