California Lottery CEO Joan Wilson, who headed up the lottery through a number of tumultuous episodes including two failed advertising agency reivews, has left her post after some three years on the job, a lottery spokeswoman said. No comment
The spokeswoman said Ms. Wilson was an appointee of California Gov. Gary Davis. She referred calls for comment to the governor's office, which did not return phone calls. Other attempts to reach Ms. Wilson by phone and e-mail were unsuccessful.
Ms. Wilson, who formerly worked in government affairs for Southland Corp., owner of 7-Eleven stores, directed the lottery through a time when it was criticized for selling scratch-off tickets long after prizes were awarded. In 2001, she tried to make up for the difficulties by holding a "second-chance" drawing.
Ad review chaos
Under her tenure, the lottery also conducted two full scale reviews for an advertising agency, each time throwing out the decision on an apparent successful bidder. The lottery is still working on a new request for proposal, expected to be released later this year, the spokeswoman said.
Dennis Sequeira, chief deputy director, has taken charge until a new director is named, the spokeswoman said. "We still have a business to operate," the spokeswoman said.
