As a player should the focus be on the odds of winning or how often people are winning regardless? How often (other) people win matters in two ways. If somebody else wins the same drawing you do you only get your share of the jackpot. If anybody won recently the jackpot is less than it is when nobody has won for a longer period of time. I can hope to reduce my chances of sharing a jackpot by choosing a combination I think most players wouldn't choose (and I'd prefer that there was no QP opt

Powerball's increase of $8.8 Million is pretty consistent with a Monday drawing. We like Powerball's transparency with Jackpot changes. Below we can see the change in Annuity, Cash and the Sales values all move fairly well with each other. Powerball doesn't give a false perception of Jackpot growth. Mega Millions, however, we can see the disconnect of the Annuity changes relative to the changes in Cash and the Sales for each drawing at the beginning of a Jackpot Run.

They didn't come up short. They just didn't get to skim the full 50% they normally would have. Total sales for the run were a hair over $117 million. Of the $58.5 million that goes to prizes just over 44.7% is for lower tier prizes, so they'd need about $26.2 million for the smaller prizes. Add in the cash value of $41.9 million and the total prize payout is about $68.1 million. That leaves them $48.9 million instead of the $58.5 million target. The ads are only for estimated jackpots, and higher sales increase it.
