Wealthiest schools lose out in Okla. Lottery
Eight public school districts aren't receiving any of the $75 million allocated to common education this year from Oklahoma's lottery and racetrack/tribal casino laws. The reason: The schools are considered independently rich from local taxes on property and oil and gas production. That means those districts must use local money exclusively to fund teacher pay raises and full-day kindergarten, the two main programs Gov. Brad Henry cited in lauding the state's gambling partnership.Several other dis

'You assume all the money noise stops when you finally have it'
What would you do if you suddenly came into a large amount of money? Would you upgrade your home and invest the rest, putting just a little aside to build a shelter for orphaned orang-utans, just as you once said you would? Actually, you're far more likely to drive a succession of sports cars into swimming pools a visual representation of the proverbial car crash your life is likely to become as you fritter away your cash bonanza. A study at Vanderbilt University in the US found that lottery

JUDGE: Florida sex offender allowed to spend $3M lottery winnings
I don't know genius, in case maybe they win the lottery like this guy did, inherited money, got a better job, found oil in his backyard, had money secretly hidden somewhere? Why exactly do you think they deserve every dime this guy won, what is the basis for this statement? Should all lawsuits be based on every dime the person has so if they have $20,000 you get that and if they have a billion you get that? That is not rational thinking at all. At the end of the day we have statutes of limitatio

More lottery winners using trusts to accept prizes anonymously
A few comments / questions about the Power Ball Lotto game - and tonight is gonna be rough on small retail stores. Which brings up the first comment. The reasoning to reveal the Winner(s) of the jackpot is to show that there IS a real winner(s), not some scam, scheme, etc. Well, even IF winner(s) aren't plastered on every TV channel, newspaper, I would assume that someone or a couple of someone's WON, right? I don't need to see them or their picture holding a monster check. A. It is dangerou

Lottery: Promises and pitfalls
A look at problems and solutions of some state lotteries, as North Carolina leaders try to predict their own problems to come.Art Johnson isn't a big gambler but plays the Florida lottery on occasion. No, not because it will help the Palm Beach County School District, where he is superintendent. I want to win, Johnson said with a laugh.Ask him about the lottery's funding for education and Johnson is a lot less jovial. I'm unimpressed, said the former principal and school board member who now h

Life after winning the lottery
I actually think they made the smart, right decision to purchase a potential money making marina rather than a money draining yacht. The only way you can make a yacht a money maker is to open up a diving/fishing outfit, but to just own a yacht for personal use is a money drain. I would much rather own something that has the potential to make me more money and rent my fun (i.e. jet ski, snowmobile, yacht, etc.). Keep that in mind and they are living proof that that line of thinking is what has al
