Half.
tg636: I stand by what I said. The government gets enough. I am for tax cuts for everyone, and no taxes on the lottery.I disagree with those who try to demonize the war in Iraq.

Half.
MP: Check out the BigGameLottery.com FAQ, which talks about why it is half . (It's not really half, it's the whole thing.)tony: I would rather 100% go to the prize pool, rather than social services. The government gets enough of my money. They should tighten the belt and learn to be more efficient rather than digging deeper into everyone's pocket.

If you look at how governments spend money, I'd rather give the money or help people who needs it. I mean anything is better than nothing.MP

MEGA MILLIONS climbs to $222 Million
I, for one, am going to take it all if I ever happen to win. I am only 23 years old, so I will be taking it all, I can live 26 good years with the whole jackpot in my pocket! You get roughly $92 million dollars out of $222 million, I think its kind of crazy to give the government that much money. I know, that I can live off of 8 million a year. I hardly make that now and I am sure I wont make that in my life time now.

Jack Whittaker Foundation
If you are really down on your luck and need a hand out, there are faith-base and government agencies that will help you get on your feet. If I was in your condition, the first thing I would do is stop playing the lotteries.RJOh

Update: CALIFORNIA $69 million!
The lottery here in california is has the fix on it, there is nothing lucky about winning here. It depends on when and where they want to give the money out. If you look at the statistics every year about this time they let the dollar amount get high like this because of the up coming school year. Since California lost most of its Government subsidization they run up the amount at this time to make up for it.

'National' game?
If they would make the winnings from a national lottery non-taxable, it would make a big difference. A tax-free top prize would appeal to many players and the government would get it back in increased ticket sales.Making the national lotto tax free would make it more appealing than Powerball and Mega Millions where players have to pay 60% off the top. This would only be available if the player chose the lump sum payment. Norway already does this. Why not the good old USA?Orangeman

$240 MILLION POWERBALL - Wednesday
OK, I'll try to boil it down for you:The US federal government will deduct 30% of the prize if you are not a US citizen. You will only get some or all of it back if your country of residence has a tax treaty with the US.

$240 MILLION POWERBALL - Wednesday
Just to add to what Thomas said, depending on where you live, the US government may have a tax treaty with your country. If so, you may end up paying taxes to your home country, and get reimbursed the US tax.
