Texas $50 scratch off
That's $50 spent on ONE ticket, and if you lose, you have to explain that you lost $50 on a single bet. I have a policy, I don't explain my gambling losses to anyone and I don't expect anyone else to explain their gambling losses to me. Maybe if I had a hard working spouse supporting me or a family too young to support themselves depending on me I would feel differently. Buying lotteries tickets may be a waste of money, but I see people happily wasting their money on booze and cigar

A bit delayed in responding here, but I think you have to itemize now to claim gambling losses, so depending on the complexity of your non-Lotto tax profile that may be a factor too.

IRS has a $600 threshold on reporting requirements for independent contractors, and I believe the $600 applies to gambling winnings in some way (not tied to the independent contractor part, just saying they seem to like that # as a threshold). So I think the requirement would need to be changed by them as well.

So if they do withhold the percentage up front I won't owe anything? I do make a decent wage as a registered nurse so I'm already in a high tax bracket, plus single and no kids. Should I start saving loser tickets to deduct for tax time next year for gambling loses to recoup what they take up front?

I'm mad for you pikachu13. The lottery is a scam. It doesn't even have to be rigged, it's just that contemptuous of it's customer base. It is a scam and people will always fall for it. You're either ignorant, in denial, or content losing more than you win because it's fun . Gambling-types are highly irrational. Not always stupid, but irrational. And impulsive.

I'd totally click the one's without a picture. That's true gambling :). Thanks for the picture it makes me laugh. Every single book of tickets comes with a display card atleast in our state, so I think that display is great.

I might have to try that. I'm not going to claim 2 million in losses, but.... if i can play like 100k in scratch offs knowing that everything i lose, i basically save on my tax bill, why the heck not do it? I feel like in missing something here. It's almost like gambling for free.

California lottery scratchers tax on winnings question
Can you deduct gambling costs on your taxes? Say you spent $1,000 on scratchers that year, could you put that as a deduction and how?

Interesting. I certainly understand how it's effectively the same thing, but I remember that a few years back there was a bill proposed in the Florida House to explicitly allow debit cards to be used. I don't think it got passed committee (the argument against being that having to get cash acted as at least a slight deterrent against over-spending on gambling). I wonder if the retailer rules from the Lottery are anywhere to be found (in other words: I wonder if the retailers accepting debit are

Bad Day Scratching
Last year, I think I lost over $100 in a day on scratchers. I was determined to make up my losses, so I took the other $100 that I had and ended up losing it within a minute. So, I had to make up for my losses by cancelling my internet service for 2 months. It was also my punishment for becoming too addicted to gambling.
