Been running ScratchSmarter for 15 years, pulling daily prize data from official lottery sites across 41 states. We just published a full analysis on something we're calling the Dead Zone games where every top prize has been claimed but the lottery keeps selling them at full price. When a Scratch Off is Ending...
The lottery doesn't know which tickets are winners, since they're printed in a secure facility. The only way for them to guarantee all top prizes are won is to leave the game open and wait for people to play it. I agree, it's crummy for them to end a game when 6 of 14 top prizes remain. Then again, if the players won't play it, then there's no point in stocking the shelves with tickets people won't buy. Most people pick tickets based on looks not stats. Ditto Sum Buddy. I just wanted to share that the $20 Gold Rush Limited and $50 Old Blue $1,000,000 A Year For Life are both ending on 10/24. I've noticed a lot of retailers have already gotten rid of the Gold Rush but a few still have some of For Life. There are over 40 top prizes of $1,000,000 on the $50 game so the Lottery knows what they are doing.
