Appeals court hands loss to New Jersey sports betting effort
A federal appeals court on Tuesday dealt another defeat to New Jersey's years long attempt to legalize sports betting, setting aside the state's legal challenge to a federal betting ban. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling invalidated a law passed by New Jersey in 2014 that would have allowed sports betting at casinos and racetracks. The court found New Jersey's law violated the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which limits sports betting to the handful of states

Brooklyn man wins court battle to collect entire $10K lottery prize that he won in 2007
It took a while and a decision by the state's highest court but a 69-year-old Vietnam vet from Brooklyn, New York, can finally enjoy all his 2007 lottery winnings. The Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that state officials were wrong to claim half of Walter Carver's $10,000 lottery jackpot as a reimbursement for public assistance benefits he received years before he bought the winning ticket. We are thrilled, said Carver's attorney Susan Antos. This has been a long battle. Because Carve

Northstar fights to keep Illinois lottery documents secret
The company hired to run the Illinois Lottery continued its fight to keep some documents under wraps, arguing their release would violate its contract with the state and expose company secrets to competitors. At a hearing before the Illinois Court of Claims, Northstar Lottery Group argued today that lottery officials have no duty to release a marketing study and a business plan even though the Illinois Attorney General has advised the documents should be made public. The firm asked the cou

High court dismisses Arkansas lottery name lawsuit
A businessman who said he owns trademarks to the lottery's name can't sue the Arkansas Lottery Commission, the state Supreme Court ruled Thursday. In a 4-3 decision, the high court reversed a lower court's decision and dismissed a lawsuit from Ed Dozier's company, Alpha Marketing, against the lottery commission. The court said the commission is a state entity entitled to sovereign immunity, which prohibits lawsuits against the state. Because a judgment for Alpha would operate to control t

Missouri will allow lottery winners to remain anonymous
The Supreme Court just made a similar ruling that effects colleges from using the likenesses of athletes. Unless there's a different case that I haven't heard of that's not even remotely close to what the ruling was. About a week ago the court ruled that the NCAA couldn't limit colleges' educational benefits to student athletes. If the court had issued a (probably pointless and irrelevant) ruling that colleges couldn't use student athletes' likenesses without permission I can't imagine what

Ontario Lottery awards man half of $6.1M lottery prize with remainder in legal limbo
I would be very surprised if the court did not split the money 50/50. They play the lottery together so it was a joint effort and they lived together as a couple. We have also seen in other cases where there is deceit (in this case, lying about the ticket and moving out), the court will at least split it and in one case, I believe the deceitful party had to give more than 50% of his/her share. If it was his ticket, why did he lie about it??? And none of those cases had a written agreement. I dou

Winners suing Illinois Lottery try to rope in other states
It's in the last paragraph and the lawyer is asking the court to put the money due to MUSL into a interest bearing fund. Thomas Zimmerman, an attorney representing unpaid Illinois Lottery winners owed at least $288.4 million, said he will seek a court order this week temporarily stopping the multi-state lottery providers from sending Illinois its share of winnings. Instead, that money would be deposited with the court clerk so it can earn interest and be paid out to winners, he added.

Court rules grandmother, 90, will receive $1.85 instead of $41M jackpot
As a 90-year-old grandmother, Pauline McKee tries to maintain a sweet disposition. When she played a penny slot machine that told her she had won more than $41 million, the Antioch woman remained pretty calm. That was nice, she said, recalling her reaction. Very nice. And when she learned on Friday that the Iowa Supreme Court ruled the casino does not have to pay her the big bucks, McKee took it stoically. Instead, she won a mere $1.85 on the bet. I had my doubts from the start, be

Ex-wife gets millions from lottery winner 10 years after leaving him
I wonder if he can appeal the decision in a higher court or would he consider that too time consuming and a waste of time and more money. I remember a case in Alabama in which a waitress was given a winning Florida lottery ticket worth $10M by a customer who thought she would share any winnings with her fellow employees but she didn't and so when a local court decided she should she appealed that decision in the state supreme court and it was overturned.
