Math challenge - Mega Millions white ball range
There are 70 white (main) balls in Mega Millions. The player chooses 5 balls from 1 to 70 (or opts for a Quick Pick to randomly choose the same). Define R (for range) as max ball - min ball + 1 . For example, if the player chooses the balls {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}, then R = 5. Now consider the case where the balls are chosen randomly, such as a Quick Pick or lottery drawing for the winning numbers. Maybe try Quick-Pick (Or Lucky Dip as we call it in the UK) this time. It may work. I've even heard stories of people who ditch their regular numbers for a Quick Pick and end up winning.

That cain't be true, cauze it would be implying that NO Self-Pick ticketz EVER win..!! Had to laugh when I read that because if 80% of winning tickets are QPs, by default 20% of winning tickets should be self picks. What I have been trying to do is determine if another method of picking numbers will get better results than the lottery terminal quick pick most players use. I did a similar study previously on Lotto, Powerball, and MegaMillions in which I picked a static set of numbers and played the same numbers draw after draw and along side a different quick pick each drawing. On all three games, I actually got better results from the random quick picks than I did from playing the same numbers every draw.

Until about six months ago, the New York State Lottery used to post if the first prize winning ticket was a QUICK PICK or REGULAR (OWN NUMBERS). I wrote and asked why they don't make the distinction any longer. The reply I received said that because of SECURITY ISSUES they don't do it any more. I couldn't think of any security issue where it would matter if the public knew if the ticket was a quick pick or if the winner chose their own numbers.

Not in Canada, but I have been using the quick pick generator here for Louisiana games and it isn't hard. I've used it for Louisiana Lotto, Easy 5, Powerball, and MegaMillions and it's pretty easy. I bring up the site on my Android phone and pick the numbers and fill out the playslips right there in the store. It's very easy to use, just bring along a pen to fill out the playslips since it seems most stores around here don't always have a pen available.
