GOP legislators question math in Texas lottery-sale plan
Texas Gov. Rick Perry's proposal to sell off the state lottery to fund cancer research and health insurance was met with skepticism Tuesday from a number of key Republican lawmakers who said the numbers don't add up.
I don't know anyone who's supporting it, said Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, who chairs the powerful House Appropriations Committee. I'd give it only a 10 percent chance of passing.
In an e-mail, Sen. Robert Duncan, R-Lubbock, who heads the Senate State Affairs Committee, sa

Why Did Japan Attack Us?
Patrick J. Buchanan
12/11/01
Of all the days that will "live in infamy" in American history, two stand out: Sept. 11, 2001, and Dec. 7, 1941.
But why did Japan, with a 10th of our industrial power, launch a sneak attack on the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor, an act of state terror that must ignite a war to the death it could not win? Were they insane? No, the Japanese were desperate.
To understand why Japan lashed out, we must go back to World War I. Japan had

State to rebid lottery deal as lobbyist concerns arise
Seeking to erase concerns the state's long-time lottery vendor might have enjoyed an inside edge in winning its latest contract, New Jersey state treasurer Bradley Abelow announced yesterday the state will rebid the job for the third time in 15 months.
Abelow ended special hearings that have been going on before former state Supreme Court Justice Daniel O'Hern Jr. and said the department will move quickly to solicit new bids.

Another Gamble for Online Betting
Legal wrangling in the U.S. is clouding the prospects for the industry world-wide
Two recent arrests of online-gambling executives in the U.S. are drawing attention to a spirited but so far unsuccessful effort in Washington to clarify the legal status of Internet gambling and resolve the political and legal issues of regulating it.
Earlier this month, Peter Dicks, at the time nonexecutive chairman of Sportingbet PLC, Britain's largest publicly traded Internet-gambling company, was arrested

Alabama Senate passes lottery bill
Without a vote to spare, a plan to let Alabama voters have their say on a state lottery for the first time in 20 years stayed alive today.
The Alabama Senate passed the bill by a vote of 21-12. Twenty-one was the minimum number for passage because the bill is a proposed constitutional amendment, requiring approval of three-fifths of the 35 senators.
The bill moves to the House, where it faces the same three-fifths requirement. If it wins final passage, it would go on the ballot for voters
