As a Lottery JP winner: Would you " help" your city out if they were on the verge of bankruptcy?
Great post CdanaT! However your logic will never win out over envy and theft in the hearts of man. Society is based off self interest. What people can't make they will vote to steal it. Then direct democracy society moves from gold coins silver coins as money to fiat paper money in order to steal through inflation. Then you have theft, debt, booms, busts, recessions, depressions, welfare, wars, death, rinse repeat. Dictatorships don't work for liberty but neither does the voters through dire

California family's fight over $51 million lottery jackpot is over
Of course he paid full tax as you put it because there is no way to avoid not paying tax- he could not pull a Wesley Snipes.Fact of the matter is it was not HIS MONEY to begin with. She won , not him, she went into the convenient store to purchase the ticket, not him.Just because she was shaking uncontrollably to sign the ticket does not mean ownership is transferred over to the Son.Sure his name is on the placard on the table why?- because he signed it. But theft is theft, a so called white lie

NY brothers claim $5M win from '06 lottery ticket
The statute of limitation for theft in NY is 5 years, but that's more or less irrelevant. If the ticket is stolen they're both guilty of possession of stolen property, which in this case is a felony that could get them up to 25 years, the same as for the original theft. Then there's the fraud they just committed by claiming the prize as their own. Assuming the parents (or anyone else) know they didn't really buy the ticket they'd have the honor of being co-conspirators for the related conspiracy

$640 MILLION: MEGA MANIA!
Yes, but if you're in an accident on your way to the lawyer's office, and the paramedics take your ticket, as you suggested, having multiple photos of you holding the ticket would seem like it should hold a lot of weight in your lawsuit against the paramedic. And to the other person who thinks it's crazy taking pictures and making copies, just claiming it right away is the foolish route -- as any lottery commission will tell you. All say to get your financial planning ducks in a row before cl

Illinois Lottery hopes to sell tickets online in '3 to 4 months'
IDK who your replying to - but I think a widespread tax evasion by the public is actually more moral than the widespread theft of private citizens money through legalized theft (AKA: Taxes) - If you were referring to people evading taxes on lower level prizes. I mean think about it - if you beat the long odds and actually pull in more money over a year playing the lottery - should Uncle Sam get a cut? Hellllllll no. Sure, honesty is the best policy. But by that same logic, it would have

Illegal alien faces deportation after threatening his boss over lottery prize
I learned something new today. I didn't think an illegal person could claim a lottery prize. Since I've always heard that lottery officials will search by your social security number to find out if you owe any Student Loans, Back Taxex, Child Support, etc. Question: Does someone with a green card have a social security number or other number used for tax purposes? How then does someone without any number claim winnings? In this case of the Boss claiming the winning ticket for himself, I thin

Cheated lottery winner files lawsuit
ttech10. The TX Lottery Commission (they have the available funds) should have paid Mr. Willis the remaining $355K two years ago. It would have been strong press for them advertising that though the ticket back wasn't filled out by Mr. Willis, they have chosen to support the law enforcement and judicial court's proof of theft. However, maybe there are so many cases of unregistered clerk theft, just like this, that they can't set this as a precedence. Now, with all the work the lawyers did, M

Store clerk gets prison term for Ohio lottery ticket theft
The perp is a PROFESSIONAL THIEF...DUH!!!!!! I cannot believe that this person was able to get away with this and how in the heck did Kroger hire her with a record of theft....unless no reference check was done!! I'm not a virgin to firing employees for theft, and yes you can usually spot a thief within a few days of observing them, especially if you're expierenced with the 7-Eleven company motto, as i am..... IN GOD WE TRUST, EVERYBODY ELSE WE POLOGRAPH!!

Massachusetts store owner wins $1 million
Would never accuse you of stealing. I was speaking in generalities. However, in your example, she stole the tickets. That was the intent. Theft is theft. If you speed and do not get caught, are you breaking the law? YES! If she had not hit a winner, would she still have went back and paid for them? It goes back to that other thread of the woman using a stolen credit card, then using it to buy a ticket, then winning. If you rob a bank, use the money for MM tickets and hit the jackpot. The
