N.C. Lottery foe confident that lottery will be ruled an illegal tax
By Steve Ford, News Observer Bob Orr has an agreeably youthful look about him, and not just because he's four days younger than I (a trivia item once called to his attention). Maybe it's only my imagination, but these days there seems to be even a hint of mischief in his smile as if he were a kid who had just poked a stick into an ant hill and was enjoying the confusion. If Orr prevails in his latest legal venture, lots of Raleigh's political ants will be running in tight circles.

Newspaper analyzes Fla. Lottery education funding
Editor: This highly biased newspaper article was published in Boca Raton News on Friday, April 27. It is presented here to educate lottery players about an unfortunately common form of so-called analysis , which in reality is nothing more than slanted opinions of certain journalists, who seek only the information that will support their narrow agenda. . . . . . State run lotteries generate in excess of $50 billion a year nationwide. State run lotteries are fond of saying how much of

N.J. is next state to consider bad election lottery idea
By Charles Paolino Home News Tribune, New Jersey Who wants to be a millionaire? That's the question Assemblyman Patrick Diegnan wants to ask potential voters or, at least, that's one way to express the theme of a bill he's proposing in the state Legislature. Diegnan, a Democrat representing the 18th District, is one of two legislators suggesting that a lottery be held each year on Dec. 31 for a million-dollar prize to be awarded a registered voter who cast a ballot that year in a pri

Despite dire predictions, Net gambling not changed by new U.S. law
John Brokopp Courier-News When President George W. Bush signed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in October, many reports gave the impression it sounded like the death knell for the multibillion-dollar Web-based gambling industry. On the contrary, all it did was strictly regulate the process by which funds are transferred from users of the sites to the offshore companies which own and operate them. The practice itself wasn't declared illegal. Reputable foreign companies wh

Did the Oklahoma Lottery break its promise?
Published by the Muskogee Phoenix August 17, 2006 The Oklahoma Lottery Commission may not be doing anything different than lotteries in other states in allowing trusts to claim prizes, but we don't want to be like other states. We want winners identified just as the commission said they would be identified with the minimum name and hometown. Despite stating on its Web site that winners cannot be anonymous, the commission allowed the June 17, $101.8 million Powerball winners to claim

Andy Rooney: Lotteries and lottery players are stupid
Editor: The following is a weekly 60 Minutes commentary by CBS News correspondent Andy Rooney, originally broadcast on March 19, 2006, and re-broadcast last night. The study that Rooney quotes, saying that poor people gamble the most, is completely false. All credible studies show that all demographics gamble roughly the same amount. Rooney's commentary is shown here to illustrate the ignorant and myopic arguments of some anti-lottery critics. I suppose it's true that I'm too easily annoye

A million bad reasons to vote
Why the Arizona voter lottery is a terrible idea By Jeff Jacoby, Boston Globe Arizona voters will face an embarrassment of electoral riches this fall, when as many as 19 proposed laws appear on the state ballot for their approval. Among the measures to be voted on are a 50 percent increase in state legislators' salaries, a constitutional amendment allowing bail to be denied to illegal aliens , and the designation of English as the state's official language. But one Arizona initiative ha

Don’t turn the voting process into a lottery
By Cheryl Tatum Hendersonville Star News The idea of turning the voting process into a lottery as proposed by an Arizona politician is one that is surely prompting comment from many circles. Now when I write columns for The Star News they typically are on issues or events that revolve around our local community. After all, this is a community newspaper and I believe should address those ideas that impact us where we live. However, nothing is more important for us as a nation than the v

Buying Mega Millions lottery tickets a strictly defensive act
By Mark Hare Rochester Democrat and Chronicle Imagine how you'd feel if you came to work on a Monday morning and found the office empty. Not because the company had down-sized to a department of one. But because you were the only one who said no to the office Mega Millions pool. Ten co-workers bought 20 tickets and won - don't be greedy - say, a mere $175 million. They took a lump sum and walked away with $6 million after taxes. And then they walked right out the door into retirement.

N.C. lottery is quickly piling up a lot of dirty laundry
Editorial By Asheville Citizen-Times published February 19, 2006 The North Carolina Lottery may bring extra money into state coffers, but the questionable ethics surrounding its inception and the controversies it continues to generate raise serious questions about whether the cost outweighs the value. Last week two new conflicts presented themselves. The first confirms the worst suspicions of many lottery opponents and the fears of some lottery supporters. The second is a slap in the face
