Avid S.C. lottery player wins $1,000,025
A South Carolina man is a millionaire after buying a $10 scratch-off lottery ticket in Rock Hill. Ervin Ratterree Junior of Catawba says he plays the lottery daily and has won quite a few times. But on Wednesday the 52-year-old won his biggest prize $1 million. I was shocked, Ratterree told the (Rock Hill) Herald. That's a dream come true. Ratterree purchased the winning Cash Bonanza Riches instant ticket from the Lesslie Food Shop. Four $1 million top prizes are still out there, sai

Most lottery players never see big payoff
At a convenience store with a hilltop view of Williams-Brice Stadium, Jeff Connor scribbles five numbers on a Palmetto Cash 5 lottery slip. If I've got 20 extra dollars, I'll put 10 percent or so into the lottery. Just like tithing, he said. Connor estimates he spends $20 to $30 per week on lottery games for a very simple reason: I'd like to be a millionaire. Meet the bread and butter for the Palmetto State's lotto. They're residents who play regularly but have never won big. And

S.C. Lottery Director: Profit losses leveling off
Sales of South Carolina lottery tickets initially sank as gas prices climbed, but customers seem to have gotten used to paying more at the pump, the state's lottery director said Wednesday. When gas prices climbed above $3 a gallon after Hurricane Katrina, lottery sales at South Carolina gas stations fell sharply, probably because customers felt that they had less pocket change after filling up. But a sample survey of retailers shows convenience store sales have since leveled, director Ernie

South Carolina's first Powerball million-dollar winner in 2005, the 61-year-old Chester native scored a $400,000 prize Tuesday when he learned his quick pick ticket matched the first five numbers. I never thought I would win big again, he said. When you buy a ticket, (there's) that possibility you might win. Two years ago, Stephenson bought his winning ticket at the Pantry Express convenience store on the J.A. Cochran Byp

Scholarships hit by S.C. Lottery downturn
As revenue declines, grants could cover less of rising in-state tuition Declining revenues from the S.C. lottery and increasing demand for the scholarships it provides means students could see their tuition grants drop. It's already happened in Georgia, where tighter standards for winning lottery-funded scholarships have cost 18,000 students once-free rides. Some day, we will have to cap the cost, S.C. Senate Finance Chairman Hugh Leatherman said. The general fund cannot afford to ha

$800,000 lottery ticket now worthless
Winning Powerball ticket sold; buyer misses deadline to collect prize A little more than six months ago, somebody bought a Powerball ticket at the Quick Mart at the corner of Cherry Road and Heckle Boulevard. Somebody, somewhere, in the lint trap of a clothes dryer, or maybe on the floorboards of a pickup truck, has a scrap of paper that was worth $800,000. That scrap is now worthless. The window for claiming prizes in South Carolina is 180 days. The unclaimed prize is the largest

I called my CPA and a tax lawyer before we claimed the prize, said 79-year-old Dick, of Wilmington, NC. I'm still dreaming. I guess when I wake-up, I'll jump up and down. Traveling from their summer home in Florida, Dick and Colleen purchased lottery tickets in every state along the way. We boug

The S.C. lottery will likely offer its million dollar raffle game again, said Ernie Passailaigue, executive director. The lottery awarded four prizes of $1 million and hundreds of other prizes Monday in the game that works just like a door-prize drawing. The Carolina Millionaire Raffle game sold just over 900,000 of its $10 tickets and paid about $5.5 million in prizes, Passailaigue said. We did not sell out, so I wouldn't say it was a raving success, Passailaigue said. It was a succ
