A Son of £77m jackpot winner Dolores McNamara has fled Limerick following reports of a plot to kidnap him. Gary McNamara, his partner and their child left their Castletroy home early this week and it is understood they are now at a secret location following a police tip-off. But police refused to comment on the matter last night.

It is understood they were aware of the plot to kidnap the EuroMillions winner's eldest son and hold him for ransom. On Monday, city-based police are believed to have passed on knowledge of what they saw as a real danger that the father-of-one could be a kidnap target. The plot, it is understood, was well advanced in its planning and its execution was "imminent".

The 26-year-old is said to have gone into hiding almost immediately to avoid any possibility of being held hostage. Sources last night said that the threat existed solely to Dolores' eldest son, although it is understood the jackpot winner herself was not in the city when the news was passed on to him by police. The gang plotting the kidnap is said to be based in the Munster region.

This illustrates to importance of being allowed to keep your anonymity. The media should not be allowed to publish details of lottery winners without their permission.

Or atleast have the intelligence to go some where you can be difficult to access. I made the same point about the NJ winners. Staying in the same crowded neighborhood, with inadequate security is inviting some one to rip you off. A huge lottery win changes ALL of your life, not just your income. Jack Whitiker was the poster child. It is like a large neon signing saying "Free money here." Buy them books, and buy them books, and they chew on the covers.

Sounds like Gary needs to invest in some home protection like pitbulls or german sheperds and some firearms and learn how to use them.

What I never understand is why they go after lottery winners. Lotttery winnners have chump change compared to the bottom of the Forbes or Fortune 500 or even 1000 yet they chose to go after lottery winners who have less than 10% of the people on the bottom of those lists.

Exactly the reason not to brag about winning, to move to a gated community and take the payments over twenty years, they can't get it all if you don't have it all at once.

They go after lottery winners, because they are in the media, especially the tabloid press. Most people don't have a clue who is on the Fortune list, especially the bottom half. Many wealthy do all they can to stay out of such lists, not just for security reasons, but they don't like being bothered by the media. Most people don't realize the importance of privacy until they lose it.

One thing successful and unsuccessful criminals recoginize is an easy target. An unprepared multi-millionaire is ALWAYS an easy target. The Forbes 500 have years of experience dealing with their riches.

If the winner had been an LP member, they could have read the multiple threads on this and have been prepared.

As I said in a previous thread Dolores needs to move the clan to Florida. Wait a year or three than visit Erin a few times of year and hire a private security firm for the visits. Someday you can return but your life has changed forever it's time to accept that and deal with that. My prayers are with her and the family.......

Sounds as though these folks are in for a long spell of this sort of thing. Fleas or no fleas.

Hope it all works out for them in a way that doesn't involve moving to Florida. New Zealand might be nice. OZ.

Living in hot and humid Florida would definitely be a great option. With the lottery money, you could hop on a private jet every time there is a fire or hurricane disaster. Then get off in NYC, see a broadway play or two, and maybe have a few nice dinners. Then go back to Florida and see how much insurance you can collect. You would need some small business in NYC though, that way it would all be a business expense tax write-off. OK, maybe one meeting with an employee.

I don't think a lot of these winners have been bragging about winning have they? I think they get a lot of media attention and just catch the eye of some would be criminal who wants to take their money.

This is sad. I also have concern about the recent Mega Millions Jackpot winners who allowed themselves to be plastered all over the media with a press conference no less.

Lottery Players need to do their research, particularly as it relates to Sudden Wealth Syndrone. Another thing people need to do is read the Millionaire Next Door, and get an understanding of how wealthy people really live, not the MTV Wealthy.

Earlier this year someone was kinapped by a sister and law and friend and murdered for his winnings. Wake up people. Your life will undoubtedly change, and you need to put time and common sense to work for you, as well as the winnings.
